St Agnes Orphanage, Wales. Present day.

Gwen Cooper hurried into the room as the man woke with a screaming jolt, terrified out of his wits.

“Shhh, it’s all ok. Your safe here pet. No-one will hurt you.”

She tried to comfort him as much as she could but it was hard without causing him to freak out even more.

He was tall, muscular and when he yelled in his sleep it was a crisp American accent. Those screams were the only reason she knew he had a functioning voice box as the man had not uttered a word since he arrived at the orphanage. Gwen signed, she knew he couldn’t stay, he was disrupting the children too much.

She had to talk to her husband and see what they could do to help him.

She stroked his short black hair as he slid once again into sleep. Once she was satisfied he was resting she rose to go to bed. She would tackle the Rhys in the morning.

“Come in”

Gwen Cooper pushed inside, her husband by the window watching their guest as he walked around the grounds.

“How long has it been Gwen?”

“It was two nights ago when we caught him trying to climb over the gates. He was wet and beyond distressed. He won’t eat and when he does sleep he has horrific nightmares, only making a sound when he is in the grips of one.”

“He can’t stay here Gwen, you and I both know that.”

“But to hear his screams....Oh Rhys!”

“We need to call the police.”

“But we have done, they want to take him to Providence Park”

“We can’t help him here, he needs to move on.”

“Oh but Rhys, if you only heard him, he’s terrified. Every night he locks himself in his room, barricading the door with a chair. Last night he was calling out a name in his sleep….Diesher

….Disher... something like that. I can’t abandon him Rhys, not when he is so lost.”

“He can’t stay here Gwen!” He turned back to the window and watched the man as he sat on the bench, leaning back as if listening to some tune that was not there.

“I know someone who will help though.”

“Who?”

“I think we need to call Torchwood Investigations, if anyone will help he will.”

“Rhys, we can’t afford to pay anyone and aren’t you running out of favours with him yet?”

“Oh no, you should know a Welsh favour is for life.”

He smiled as he thumbed through his address book until he found the one he was looking for.

“Ah yes, Ianto Jones”

Time for a well placed guilt trip, he thought.
