Outshine the sun

What defines beauty? I mean, is it the media? Is it our peers? Or is it only ourself vs.ourself. While putting on makeup today for a concert (clearly, I had to wear more..) I remembered something from this summer. I was at the mall with my boyfriend and I had no makeup on and was not looking grade-a. I decided to go into Victoria's Secret with him and use some of their makeup samples to at least make my self presentable. He asked what exactly mascara did and I simply responded with "watch." His eyes were glued to me as I carefully applied a coat of brown mascara to my limp eyelashes. If youve never seen this comparison, I adivse you to go watch someone do this.. it does make a big difference. I then showed him one eye "made up" while the other sad eye was bare. I said "see?" His face scrunched up and he said "I actually prefer the other one." I brushed it off as a stupid boy comment and proceeded to add mascara to the lone eye. I don't know why I just remembered this story today but I got to thinking.. what if everyone's perception of beauty is different. I mean, naturally it is. You see girls all the time with WAY too much green eyeshadow and wonder who told them that was a good idea. But to them. that could be beautiful. If there isn't a standard set of "beauty" then how can we accomplish it? So I guess that cliche of "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is completely true. For me, I think beauty is 75% natural and 25% process. I think a more defined eye and a dash of blush and chapstick can perk up any sad face. BUT that's only me. Some people like dramatic lips while the eyes just show their natural color. It doesn't make sense. GIrls like boys who don't wear makeup (lets hope..) but then we, ourselves go into the bathroom every hour to make sure our eye liner isn't running. Now i'm not saying ditch the makeup or go au natural, but the question is certainly interesting. It's odd to think that I personally find myself the prettiest in a t-shirt and jeans. Now I love getting dressed up, but beauty to me is simplicity. It's odd to think that there isn't one set man or woman to define beauty. It couldn't happen. Models, actors and public figures (notice paris hilton fit in none of the first two, so she got  a "public figure" category) are preceived as the most glamorous and beautiful. WHO SAYS? Who's that one guy saying.. she's the most beautiful. Can beauty ever really be defined?
