Right. It's been busy. Now that I'm about to head out again, I should jot some of this down lest I forget by the time I get back from the Great Hollow.
Honestly, I need to start charging for these escort trips.
I've spoken with a number of people since the night of the strange light, and I can't be mistaken. Some True Rune activated that night. It wasn't any of the elements, that I know for sure, even if the landscape looked like True Water had gone out of control. One look at Chris and I could tell, it wasn't her. True Fire is stable as well, so it couldn't have melted all that snow. To add to the confusion, I sense something different about the Queen. I came close by her when she was talking to Kaiden, and I felt that sense that I get whenever I come into contact with another True Rune. But Kyle said he wasn't sure she had it. Add that to her strange behavior a few days ago, and rumors that someone was burned...well. It all looks pretty obvious to me, but without direct statements from her or anyone who knows her, I can't make the accusation.
Besides, runes come and go all the time. For all I know, there's another Rune lying in wait like the Beast Rune a year ago...the status of which, I can't be sure of. Maxine disappeared a while ago, so unless she left it in the care of the demon Guide, it could be unstable as well. But Blight isn't acting up, so...perhaps not. I sense that Punishment is no longer around. Others? I'm not positive. It wasn't my job to keep track of them, but I was keeping an ear out for my own curiosity's sake.
At least now things have settled. The castle is functional again, even if the grassy areas and parts of the grounds are still coated in ice. I'd kill for a thaw right about now, or a stronger sun than the pale sort that filters through the clouds. That's not enough to melt the ice, it's a couple of inches thick in places. Light snow has fallen since, so a lot of ice is hidden beneath the powder. Pretty dangerous. I'm surprised more people haven't fallen and broken bones yet, but people have generally been staying indoors. Maybe that's why there's a bit of a plague going around.
As a favor to both Rahal and Mathiu, I'm hiking to the Great Hollow to see if the Lizards have any advice they could suggest for the care of a dragon-horse. It's probably a long-shot, but we don't have time to send away to the Dragon Knights in Toran. Sigurd will have to stay to help in the infirmary, so I'm torn. Should I seek one other to join me, for the sake of protection, or do I simply go it alone? I think this is the first time I've taken a longer trip alone since making him my partner. Funny, how much I've grown accustomed to him. I can function without him but I don't know if I will ever fully revert back to the solitary man I was. Knowing that I will be returning to him at the end of the road helps.
At least, this winter there is no threat of a madman putting his sword through all of us, nor of Sigurd falling ill from stress. For that much, I am thankful.
