Being in Massachusetts and around my suitemates who are all New Englanders makes me realize that we have our own culture on Long Island and nothing really compares to it. It's not that we're better on Long Island, it's just we're different and I'm more suited for LI life than NE life.
I wrote this in soc yesterday...it's not the best written poem ever, but it gets the point across
Long Island Born and Bred
Long Island born and bred
sarcasm, wit - love of a sunset
watching it over Fire Island -
to the right, of course
North Shore - Three Village
more money than you'd know
Out east - fame, MTV,
a hurting culture
Long Island born and bred
Parkways over highways
tailgating, 90, knowing -
where cops hide and wait to catch you -
going under 60 in a 55
City not too far - random trips
not too often - or taking trains to work
Long Island born and bred
Studying fro a reents
with a friend - 40 minutes away
another school, world - same exam
Long Island born and bred
Billy Joel and others make us proud
Mariah Carey - not those who
"live here"
just those born
Long Island born and bred
Where else can a small town
be your average suburb?
Things are so slow paced off of Long Island and culture really is different. It's hard to describe, but going home with Amanda made me realize it more. Long Island's not broken up into towns - well we have towns, but they're not really borders. School districts are more border-like than the towns. There aren't signs when you cross a town border, a lot of times you just know (ie cross Woodside go from Patchogue to Medford or the spot on South Country that you just realize "I'm in Bellport, now"). There isn't really a difference from town to town, it's all the same culture.
We know that Long Island is 120 miles long, but most Long Islanders have been from Montauk to the City or Orient to the City at some point in their lives even if not all in the same day. I know Long Island roads and LI drivers and I can get from point A to point B and be like most other cars on the road - I'm comfortable there.
I know where the rich areas are and where to avoid even within the same towns. I know how to get almost anywhere I need to go or with directions I don't have problems finding it. I can get to almost anything I need in under 10 minutes.
My sarcasm is recognized as part of life, the people know me. People back home understand why my eyes swell up every time I pass a bowling alley and they know why I can never go back. The people know what I did for most of my life and they know me. Those who know me long enough know why I'm afraid of boys even though I don't always act it. They know about PMHS and all the little quirks inside that building...same with SOA.
Long Islanders understand each other and you can't find that in any other region. We know that we're a suburb and even our own culture from NYC. We want a bridge to CT. LI is a lifestyle and I realized that I won't be able to escape that.
For those of you who read this and don't know, I've changed my plan about staying at WNEC for Law School and I plan to return to NY. I just couldn't live anywhere but Long Island. It may be expensive and some places overrated - but I've learned that it's where I belong.
I am 100% a Long Island girl.
