True Blood Catch-Up: Where the Characters Left Off

by Maggie Pehanick

With True Blood's Summer premiere edging closer, we thought we'd sharpen our fangs, I mean, our memories of where everyone left off last season. If you recall, things aren't so peachy down in the perpetually dark Bon Temps. The season four finale leaves more that one recurring character dead, revives a couple old ones, and leaves the door wide open for some new introductions. Let's remember the final look at Sookie and company before the premiere of season five on June 10.
...

Sookie Stackhouse

Sookie wakes up from fairyland to discover she's lost a whole year of her life. After she's over the initial shock, she's tasked with taking care of Eric, who is in a weakened state (more on that later) and his personality change makes Sookie fall for him. She's torn between the new Eric and her ex, Bill. In the end, she chooses to be by herself, even after Alcide, too, confesses his feelings for her. She also has possibly her most traumatic incident on the show yet when Tara dies in her arms. At least she musters up enough strength to shoot her best friend's murderer in the face. And she gets her job at Merlotte's back!

Eric Northman

Early in the season, Eric has an encounter with Marnie, head witch, who wipes him of all his memories, resulting in a much more docile, puppy-eyed Eric. After spending most of the season shacking up with Sookie, he is inadvertently shocked back to reality by Sookie's fairy magic during a big brawl at the Festival of Tolerance. Though he's hurt by her decision not to be with him anymore, he still helps Bill extinguish Nan and her guards after they threaten Sookie's well-being.

Bill Compton

Bill has a tough first year in office as Vampire King, what with his race being under attack by those pesky witches. He's trying to get over Sookie, which he almost does, until he discovers his new lady interest is actually a distant relative. In the finale, he stakes his most vocal opponent, the AVL's spokeswoman Nan, turning her into a puddle of vampire goo.

Tara Thornton

Tara has always been the most vocal about hating the havoc in Bon Temps. She finally gets to escape from the drama in the finale, when Debbie shows up with a gun in Sookie's kitchen. Debbie takes aim for Sookie, but Tara takes the bullet for her BFF. She appears dead, but in Bon Temps, is anyone really gone forever?

Lafayette Reynolds

Poor Lafayette is possessed by two different people in season four. The latter of which, Marnie, kills his boyfriend, Jesus, in an effort to gain Jesus's powers. In a state of despair after the spirit leaves him and he realizes what's happened, Lafayette sees Ghost Jesus one more time, who reminds him that he's a medium, so he can see the dead whenever he chooses.

Alcide Herveaux

Alcide finally comes to the conclusion that his crazypants girlfriend, Debbie, is no good for him, but unfortunately Sookie still doesn't want to be with him. After he confesses his feelings, he gets called to one of his construction sites (unlike vamps, werewolves have jobs), where he discovers a hole in the cement and the chains that used to hold Russell Edgington . . . dun dun dun!

Jason Stackhouse

In the season's ickiest storyline, Jason is held captive by a tribe of werepanthers and repeatedly (and unwillingly) ravaged by the pack's females. He escapes, but must drink Jessica's blood to survive, creating a bond between the two. He spends some time convalescing before returning to his duties as deputy. Later, Jason and Jessica get it on in the back of his pickup, and it's great until Jason asks Jessica to wipe his memory so he won't have to deal with the guilt. Jessica refuses, so he finds another way to absolve himself - by telling his best friend, Hoyt, exactly what transpired between him and Hoyt's ex. It goes pretty terribly.

Jessica Hamby

After living with Hoyt for a year, the spark is gone, and Jessica feels the urge to be rebellious. She saves Jason's life with her blood, and later he saves hers by pushing her out of the sunlight when she breaks her silver chains under Marnie's spell. She cuts things off with Hoyt, but after she sleeps with Jason, he tells her he doesn't want to be with her and casts her out of his house. Eventually, they get back in the sack, but it's Jessica who says she doesn't want a relationship.

Pam De Beaufort

Pam spends most of season four horribly disfigured after Marnie casts a spell that rots her face off. She's probably the only one overwhelmingly grateful to have Eric gain his memories back, which is why she's so hurt to see that he's still in love with Sookie even when he's back to his old self. She does show a bit of vulnerability, accepting a hug from Ginger, the waitress at Fangtasia, at the end of the finale. Three cheers for emotional progress!

Sam Merlotte

First Sam's brother Tommy kills their parents, then a bunch of werewolves kill Tommy while he's posing as Sam. Now Sam is without a family, unless you count Hoyt's mom, Maxine, who wants him to call her "Mama" now. He's also dating Luna, whose ex happens to be the werewolf responsible for Tommy's death.

Arlene Fowler and Terry Bellefleur

Though she struggles with the idea that her baby may be possessed by the evil spirit of his late father, Rene, Arlene finally seems to be content at the end of season four. That is, until Rene shows up outside Merlotte's as she's throwing away the garbage. Rene, being more creepy than helpful, warns her to beware of Terry's past . . . which shows up in the form of Terry's old war buddy, Patrick (Scott Foley).

Andy Bellefleur

After having casual sex with a fairy in the woods, Andy decides he might actually want a relationship with Merlotte's waitress Holly. He's honest about his V addiction, and it sounds like he might want to kick it for good.
