Actor Michael Raymond-James has a homespun charm that makes him a casting director's dream.

His malleable style has helped him transcend from Rene, a faux Cajun serial killer on HBO's "True Blood," to a small-time criminal and beach bum on the new comedic drama "Terriers," which debuts Wednesday on FX. Other acting credits include "ER."
...

"I look like I could be a lot of things, depending on how we do my hair and all that stuff," says Raymond-James, a self-professed Vernors and Lafayette Coney Island lover who grew up in Oakland County and lived in Detroit. "I've played Irish, Puerto Rican and Cajun. It's good to be a blank slate ethnically."

When fans tune in to "Terriers," they will see the 32-year-old play Britt, a burglar-turned-do-gooder who has teamed up with a former cop (Donal Logue, "Grounded for Life") to start an unorthodox and unlicensed private eye team.

"I read the script, and I was stoked because it is really unique," Raymond-James says in a phone interview. "There's a 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' sort of dynamic that jumped off the page. A lot of my work is pretty heavy and dark. There's darkness in 'Terriers,' but the characters aren't bad, brutal people.

"It's something my nieces can finally watch."

Hopefully viewership will extend beyond Raymond-James' family because the show has a lot going for it. For starters, Shawn Ryan of "The Shield" is one of the series' executive producers. Best of all, Raymond-James and Logue have a tangible and very believable chemistry.

"When Michael and I did the show, we ended up renting a house together in San Diego," Logue says, adding that the two met when Logue co-starred on "Life" and Raymond-James was a guest star on the show. "So it was kind of on 24/7. I actually think that our friendship really helped."

Raymond-James feels the same way, adding theirs is a friendship that formed as soon as he saw Logue walking around with a copy of Jack Kerouac's "Big Sur" a few years ago.

'"He's like a brother," Raymond-James says of Logue. "We hit it off immediately, and right off the bat, I knew this was a dude I would be tight with forever. And with 'Terriers,' I think that really comes across."
