When asked what one does at an art opening, just having gotten back from one, I respond:
truckdrivercore (12:41:00 PM): first you walk in and sign a book if there is one; dress is not very important as some artists wear rags with a lil' jacket over the top, just for the opening. you then wander to the nearest painting or piece, and stand in front of it for 1 or 2 minutes, and go on to the next. this is all done while nonchalantly scoping out the room to see if you know anyone and can go greet them. also, if you wait they will come to you either way. after you've looked at a few pieces, you can go over and get a glass of wine (just one, and highly recommended) and a piece of cheese or cracker or carrot or something. then you wander off in another direction, looking at art, smiling at people if they catch your eye (not being antisocial), and sipping wine.
truckdrivercore (12:43:42 PM): when boredom sets in, you go home.
truckdrivercore (12:44:05 PM): but if you meet friends, you are entitled to a few more glasses of wine and discussion of your favorite and least favorite pieces and why.
spatula(12:44:38 PM): heheh
truckdrivercore (12:44:22 PM): then you get drunk and discuss purchasing some art with your friends, splitting the cost.
What is your pattern at art openings?
