"kawaii" is japanese for "cute"

gilb84: boo. there should be no christmas......FOR ANYONE

I live for two things and two things only. One of them is the holiday season. The other thing depends on my mood at the time.

Today I decided to change my desktop wallpaper to something Christmas-y. I find Google image search to be very helpful in this endeavor because I can set the filter for large images only. There is nothing worse than a skewed, blurry, or tiled wallpaper. Except maybe centering a small image that doesn't have a solid background color making it impossible to conceal the border. I hate that.

At first I was ambitious and searched for "christmas cute" - "christmas" being primarily important and "cute" being a reasonably common qualifier. This is how I discovered that the global consensus for the cutest Christmas-related image is something small dressed in a Santa costume. This small object can be any number of things - chihuahuas, infants, teddy bears, baby cacti, etc. - as long as it can fit into Paris Hilton's purse. I'm sorry, but this is NOT my idea of christmas-cute.

Fuzzy is great and mini is even better, but just because your baby let you dress him in red felt does not mean it's O.K. to interfere with everyone's Google image searches. And why the big resolution? Why can't you be satisfied with posting a small picture of your child/pet/houseplant? This may surprise you, but any family member you have harassed enough to visit your site is really just skimming. Small pictures will make your family happy. No picture at all will make us both happy. Isn't part of the yuletide spirit making people happy? I see your mouth moving but all I can hear is "Bah-Humbug!"

My mission wasn't a complete failure. I found one picture titled "Isn't Winnie cute (or is that Macy)?" I couldn't really make out the subject (Winnie/Macy) of the picture, but here's to hoping it wasn't the photographer's child. There was also a baby head superimposed over a cartoon elf's body. Please don't do this to your kids. It's creepy. If baby's first christmas is THAT big of a deal to you, stick to the Santa costumes. At least those won't give me nightmares. Finally, did you realize there's a correlation between "The ghost of Christmas present" and a Chinese website titled "Gratuitous Cute Chick Pics"? The details remain a mystery to me, but there was a seductive Vietnamese woman in red leather...

The world and I eventually accepted our differences in opinion as to what is "cute" and I settled for the search string "christmas". That's when I discovered it's possible to find my kind of christmas-cute online after all. But I suppose a more appropriate name is "kleesmus-kawaii!!"
