I just got back from 4 days in Las Vegas, from my friend since high-school's Chris's wedding, great fun, laid back wedding. Good people. Images and introspection behind the break.
This was the shaved man convention...er reception party. I ended up taking mostly video of the wedding, so don't have any pics. It was a laid back non-secular, wedding, outdoors by a man made lake. They wrote their own vows, were and used the soundtrack from Amelie for parts of the program which was nice, they had fun!. The primary concern was whether a rather agitated black-bird sqwuaking up a storm when things were setting upwas going to dive bomb the crowd. I got to be seated at the mostly improv theater actor + atheist table, so had a great time.
Chris and Misty have two cute Italian greyhounds, named Amelie and Nino (on top). Both are high energy almost pixish dogs to watch, like watching a collection of springs bound from place to place.
We went shooting, if the country is ever invaded by paper targets, they are SOOO toast. Tried two different Glocks 9mm. Pretty happy with my shooting since I which I haven't done since high-school.
We hit the strip a few times, to eat and drink, catch music. Every time I visit Vegas I'm taken back by the magnitude of people and engineering, carved out of the barren desert,. It's amusing how everything looks baked even though it's 65 degrees outside. There is so much open space, so many themed motion, billboards, fantasies for sale, relative to other parts of LA/San Fran. Makes me wonder what Burningman would look like if not transient.
Also was able to catch up with Mike+Gilda for a dinner. Which was great as they were just getting in from San Fran and about to leave to Manila in the morning, still very busy in their startup, but Mike aiming for re-retirement (meaning scaling back from 60-70 hours to 30-35 hours of cutting edge R&D that they've been up to).
Between the wedding, catching up with some high-school mates, including those that couldn't come, and their parents seeing the progression of a 10-15 years on many levels, and got me to thinking about my own future.
It's great to see friends living full lives, dealing with the issues that come up, and always striving for bigger goals and better selves, even if the consequences of that mean that we aren't as involved with each other's lives as we once were. If life is an epic adventure, at the moment, I'm still climbing the mountain, and this weekend was more of a break on the ledge after a 3 month ascent, with another 3 months ascent ahead, rather than a true resting place. As such, I was more introverted/odd than past, kinda like having a paper weight in my head,..kinda like Johnny Mnemonic, seem to have flushed parts of my ability to improvise and socialize consistently, so wasn't really free/there or able to contribute much of the time. Like despite being one of Chris's oldest friends there, it totally skipped my mind to come up with a toast until moments before, so blurted out something far less eloquent than I would have hoped, certainly intended, and have done in similar situations. I'm trying to learn to be patient/compassionate with myself there is only so much time!. Socializing is a skill and I haven't been doing much of it late, but I'm confident these are repairable.
I was able to idle a little, watched TV for a bit, first time in Hi-Def. It's a fascinating curiosity, how 3 paragraphs of information are mixed with snazzy 3d graphics, a conspiratorial tone in order to create a hour long show. It made me wonder how TV is changing science, like all the scientists being interviewed were consistently perky/attractive or almost typecast oddball if touting something possibly controversial. I bet they ask "is this person somebody you might sleep with?" before they put them in front of a TV camera.
I was contemplating riding the big rollercoaster in Primm on the way back, but as timing would have it, it wasn't open at 11pm...what's up with that? :)
Getting back, housemate has begun preps for Year 2.0 upgrades to the household, largely design related. Empty canvas's awaiting paint to be interpretted from a digital projection, and precisely tuned color to match the squash colored walls and eventual seating reupholstering. Will all the upcoming party end of April, early May.
I hate/detest MySpace. How is it a system that is so popular continues to be so crappy?
