Having recently experienced backup failure in a supposedly redundant system, please accept this giant sack full of condolences. And dried tears.

and shortly after, ironically the nightly incremental project backup overwrote the cut/deleted files making them inaccessible,
did you try to undelete them?

you can't undelete that which has already been overwritten. Had the backup utility not run that would have been possible, but the backup utility at the current near full state of the harddrive consumed the other files.
