We have never been human, especially some of us. I will not point any thumbs, but isn't the distinctive characteristic of humans mimesis? Artefacts? The ability to consciously be a "historical creature" and to create history, unlike salmon who, led by instinct, go up and down the flow of history? Animals make decisions, but they do not produce texts, outside of the fact that text is produced through them, their body (odor, physical ability), and it's a text that they cannot modify. Their condition is affected by the outside world and their actions a product of that condition. The only capacity for modifying text is imagination, but they cannot leave lasting artefacts of what's imagined in the landscape, whereas humans can.
I'm writing this and I can hear her contre-arguments. Oh I don't know professor, we'll have to see about the ambiguity of the classification system.....
