I would have posted this earlier, but kept getting distracted watching fancams
Jaejoong, and Yoochun, may have higher acting profiles, but I've always said Junsu was the best performer of the three. This was proved Thursday night at his solo concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. After a small delay, that was nowhere nearly as bad as the wait for the 2NE1 concert, they dimmed the lights and the show began. He opened with "Breath", rising out of an elevated platform on the stage in a blue suit and blinged out pimp cain, before descending down the steps to join his backup dancers. Throughout the concert, it was very clear the time he spent doing musical theatre has allowed him to grow and mature as a performer. There was a depth to his voice that you usually only see in seasoned musical veterans, and not in products of the kpop music factory lines. So it pretty much made the night for me when he sang "마지막 춤" from Elisabeth. I was so disappointed that they never released a cd or dvd of his run in Korea. The few youtube clips I could find showed he understood the character, and the influence it had on him is very apparent both in Tarantellegra and the aesthetics of this tour.
Random stuff: During three wishes, he did Angel Su for us, which was cute, but his self-consciousness when he was asked to do it was ever cuter. It was such a contrast to earlier when he was bringing sexy back with "Intoxication" and "Lullaby", and pretty much every thing else.
For "Uncommited", he mentioned it was the first time he performed this song live.
Also, Duck Butt was very much visible throughout the night. I'm not sure if he's really Korean because every Korean man I've ever seen has been completely flat in the posterior department. /shallow
One of the things I love about Junsu is his backup dancers are not the usual eyecandy clones. You could tell them apart. They actually had muscles and looked like real dancers. One of the dancers from his "Tarentellegra" video is part of his tour.
It was not as well attended as I would have liked, which annoyed me because I remember back when Kpop artists only did shows in LA, and now that they are finally coming to NY, the "fans" are too cheap to get tickets.
The venue staff at Hammerstein were incredibly nice, and helpful after a snafu with our tickets. The row we were in was one seat short, so we got upgraded to the box seats right by the stage, which we turned into our own private little party booth. Later, two other chinese women also sat down there, but they stayed faaar away from us and kept side-eyeing us hard all night. Which...yeah, we're singing and dancing and screaming. WHY ARENT YOU???
Also, made a pact with one of my group that if Junsu ever does a musical in Korea again, we will do whatever we can to get to attend, because no matter the cost, it will be worth it.
