The BBC spoils us. Not only do they give us new episodes, but we also get the Confidentials, fun interactive web games, the Tardisodes, and even episode commentary by RTD and Tennant.
Ok, so it had some plotholes you could drive a truck through, but still overall it was a good start to a new season.
We begin with the new Doctor revving up the TARDIS while Rose says her goodbyes yet again outside. As the doohickeythingamabob starts pumping, he gets an anticipatory grin on his face. Jackie kisses Rose farewell and gets a "luv you" in return, but all Mickey gets is a curt "bye". Then she runs inside the TARDIS and grins at the Doctor.
They land on New Earth, outside New New York(Futurama shoutout?) Rose grabs his arms and once again, reiterates how much she loves travelling with him. Unbeknownst to them, they are being observed by the same spider bots from "End of the World" and a strange albino henna-tattooed fellow. They lie back on the apple grass, his coat spread out so she can lay out on it, and she refers to their EotW jaunting as their "first date". A little moment I like is how as he is trying to put his coat back on, she lifts it up and helps him. And dude! Cassandra is back! In the future apparently, fashion hasn't changed much because the visitors at the hospital are wearing current clothing.
Watch out for the DIS-IN-FEC-TANT. heh. oh she'll find out. Wet!Doctor is very good. I dunno why he keeps going on about shops. It kind of feels like dialogue filler. The Face of Boe is back yet again. We saw him first in EotW, but chronologically, he was first mentioned in "The Long Game", when the news mentioned that he was pregnant.
I like that Rose finally learned a few things and had the forethought to pick up the metal thingie as she walked around in unfamiliar places.
So the Face of Boe will only tell his secret to the wanderer, the one without a home, the lonely god. Because you saw a bit of it in "The Christmas Invasion", and as we will see in this episode, it becomes apparent that this Doctor does have a bit of a god complex.
I absolutely love Cassandra Rose. You can tell Billie Piper is having so much fun with the role. Her very bad attempt at Old Cockney was almost Dick Van Dyke dancing on chimneys in Mary Poppins bad. In fact, I think I like Cassandra Rose better than Just Rose. Can't we ditch Just Rose and make Cassandra Rose the new companion? She can accompany the Doctor and provide snide commentary along the way.
And and I'm sorry but the Doctor is wearing glasses. Excuse me a moment....*fans self*...ok back now.
RTD fakes out the entire fandom with that one kiss. But the kicker was David's delivery of the line "still got it" with the slightly high, surprised voice afterwards.
I like how you subtly see the Doctor cottoning on that Rose isn't quite herself. Particularly, when he lets her take over at the computer consoles and he starts giving her sly looks.
"I'm the Doctor. There is no higher authority than me" More of the God complex there. I'm hoping we see more of it this season and it develops into something.
First we have the Matrixy-pods. Then we have zombies yet again. It's like RTD took a vacation went on holiday and wrote this by numbers. However, "The flesh is free!" was a great line,
HAHA! Cassandra Doctor is heelarious. David does fey a little too well. Yes he is a little bit foxy. "You've been looking. You like it", followed up by "outta the way blondie!" "go and play with a ball of string" and "there is no need to shout!" RTD may not be able to come up wtih interesting plots, but he can still write dialogue. I could re-watch that entire sequence over and over again.
But seriously, am I really supposed to believe that spraying everyone down with colorful water is all it takes to save the day? Oh look, the Doctor is wet again. hmmm....What was I complaining about?
heh. First thing girl zombie does is run and hug the Doctor. Smart girl there.
Superfakeout by the Face of Boe. Will it be this season's Bad Wolf? Tho spoiler reports say we won't see him again until next season.
Poor Chip the Doodle. I rather liked him. Right down to his girly way of running which if you listen to the commentary, even David liked. It's a bit tragic that the last person to tell Cassandra she was beautiful was herself, and she winds up dying in her own arms.
Next week: Werewolves and Queen Victoria and kung-fu monks oh my!
