The true reason for the season: Celebrate!
As far as I can tell, the true earliest purpose of Christmas is simply to celebrate. It isn't the religious, or even the commercial meanings that matter, ultimately, it is simply the act of celebration itself.
It is the darkest time of the year, and it is easy to get really depressed about it. Celebrating, bright cheery decorations, giving gifts, loving each other, these are things we do to help each other get through the SAD time of the year, and cheer each other up when it would be so easy to get so depressed and dejected.
This is why I love doing the SantaCon thing so much. I love having good playful silly fun, simply for its own sake. Dressing in costumes, and behaving absurdly, and trying to cheer people up.
A good laugh is a wonderful thing. I try to share them as much as I can, this time of year.
