“Happy birthday, son.” John smiled brightly and placed a colourful party hat on top of Dean's head. He couldn’t believe it had already been six years since the boy was born. To him it only seemed like last week that he was holding the newborn baby in his arms.
“Can I get my present now?” Dean asked, eager to find out what his father had gotten him this year. After all, this was already his sixth birthday, Dean was convinced that he deserved some extra special gifts because of that. “Please?” he added, looking up at John with big, curious eyes.
“When Castiel arri-” John cut off his sentence when the angel appeared out of nowhere only a split second after he had said his name. “Errr, right, I'll get you your present,” John said and stood up. “I'll be right back.”
”Happy birthday, Dean,” Castiel said, awkwardly standing next to his friend. “John told me people give each other presents when it's someone's birthday,” he went on, looking at Dean. “So I got you one.”
The smile that had been on Dean's face all day long widened even more. “Really? Can I see it?” he asked excitedly clapping his hands. Apart from pie and Cas, there was nothing better in the world than presents.
“Sure.” Castiel sat down on the sofa, next to his friend and reached into the pocket of his coat. “I made it myself because I don't know how to shop and I don’t have any money,” he added as he offered a neatly wrapped gift to Dean. “I hope you like it.”
“Thank you,” Dean replied, taking the present from the angel. He quickly tore away the wrapping paper, revealing a knitted scarf. The scarf was black with red stripes and probably twice as long as Dean was tall. “Cool!” he exclaimed, instantly wrapping the woollen item around his neck. “I didn't know you could knit,” he said, petting the scarf. It was soft and warm, perfect for a chilly winter.
“One of the angels taught me. He spends a lot of time on earth,” Castiel explained, smiling. He was happy that Dean liked his present.
“Nice scarf you got there, Dean,” John spoke as he entered the living room. He was carrying Sam who was holding a box, wrapped in purple wrapping paper. “Give the present to your brother, Sammy,” he told the one-year-old baby. He walked up to Dean and bent down a bit so Sam could give Dean his gift.
“Thank you, Sammy,” Dean said, taking the gift from Sam’s little hands and pressed a small kiss against the boy's forehead. He put the box on his lap and in a matter of seconds the wrapping paper was lying on the floor. Dean opened the box, his eyes widening when he saw what was inside: all of his dad's cassette tapes. Even though he could barely read, he did recognise all the logos of his favourite bands. AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and a few more. “Wow.” was all the boy could bring out.
“I think they will sound really good on that brand new cassette player that's in your room,” John said, his heart swelling when he saw little stars of happiness twinkling in Dean's eyes.
“You got me a new cassette player?” Dean asked in disbelief.
“I don't know, why don't you go and take a look in your room?” John replied, grinning. There was nothing in the world that could ever make him happier than that smile on his son's face. The past year had been tough and it were moments like this that pulled him through.
Dean immediately hopped off the sofa and hurried towards his room. “Dad! You're the best!” he yelled through the house when he found a shiny new cassette player in his room.
