OOC: Starfire background, for the curious

Jul 10, 2012 00:29

So, in the comics, Starfire deals with some shit. She's from the peaceful planet Tamaran, the second of three royal children, but her sister loses her ability to fly (they fly by absorbing sunshine XD) and is henceforth, in a disgusting display of ablism, considered unfit for the throne. Despite the sympathy I now have for the older sister, Blackfire (real name Kommad'r, as Starfire's is Koriand'r.... ugh, I know), she ruins it all by viciously bullying her sister and eventually turning against her home planet.  She helps the Citadel conquer Tamaran by giving away all its defense secrets, even selling her sister Starfire into slavery in the process, where Starfire remains for six years (yes, her canonical past contains all sorts of triggery issues). She eventually escapes when she and her sister were captured by the Psions, who tried to do an experiment on her and accidentally gave her the superpower of energy bolts, which freed her. She escapes to Earth.

In the TV show Teen Titans, Starfire is sort of cheerful, naive, and often used for comic relief (with a less sadistic, more pg-rated past). In the comics she is angrier and gloomier, and that's how I'm playing her. Starfire is an instinctive empath because of her species (they're all about the feelings -- but somehow also militant, whatever). Since Starfire is 17, we're definitely going for less than six years in slavery because, ick. We'll just say it was a lengthy period of time. So, she can shoot green energy bolts, and if threatened has been known to create a huge energy blast that blows everything apart/away, including herself. She can fly, but she's scared to because she hasn't flown since she was living on Tamaran. Oh, and she has a funny way of learning a new language!

Oh and by the way Troubled But Cute is a well-known storytelling trope. No, I'm not linking tvtropes.org. You're welcome.
