wellllllllll today was quite an awesome day.
except for the hour or two spent by myself, it was probably the best day that i've had so far, other than rumaging around paris.
school pretty much sucks, as it would in another language. my teachers suck, but the kids are actually pretty cool. they are a bit cold and distant at first, but i just break the ice by opening my stupid american mouth and letting my terrible, terrible german flow freely out, which usually brings a great laugh to all who care to listen.
last night a girl that i talked to at school called me and asked if i wanted to go downtown with them after 8th period today, which of course, i accepted brilliantly.
it was really good. i met many new people today, all of whom were extremely nice and understanding. im beginning to like germany. i wasnt so sure at first, but i think i may actually have a few friends now. they already invited me to hang out with them this weekend!
back to the downtown story, so we just ate at burger king in koeln, not bad, and then scurried our way down to the old rhine and sat about on the grassy area at which people sit. some old drunk man came and tried to fight one guy who was with us and starting murmuring latin spells onto him, at which we all laughed. and then he tried to walk up this ledge and fell. brilliant.
i still have to go to school. that sucks pretty hard. getting up at 6 every day is not exactly my cup of tea. but i have classes with my new found friends tomorrow so hopefully it wont be too boring.

my journey home from the rhine:
so my host mom gives me a piece of paper this morning explaining at which bus and train stops i must get off and connect with to arrive back in koeln-langel, a good 30 minutes by the trusty public transportation system, perhaps 15 by car.
if anyone has ever been in a foreign country at 9 o'clock at night, trying helplessly to read maps, and stations, and train numbers, bus numbers, train stops, bus stops, etc. it was a nightmare
1. i got off too early on my 2nd train i.e. i had to walk 10 min to the next train stop through the german ghetto, mind you. its dark. i have no cell phone. a pocket full of money and a credit card yearning to be picked by some homeless mob.
2. its dark, i find my way to the bus stop. i cant remember which stop to get off at for my house, AND its not written down in sloppy german hand-writing. so i get off too early and walk another 10 min, finally to my house.
lesson learned: never trust anybody
