It was 3:14 in the afternoon. The reading tables in the library had been taken over and rearranged for the Tropeville High Magic Club's inaugural meeting. A large banner reading "WELCOME TO THE MAGIC CLUB!!!", drawn in colorful crayons and decorated with star stickers, had been hung from the front of one table for everyone to see. The club's founder had brought some highlights of her own personal collection of spellbooks and magic items for the demonstrations, including an authentic crystal ball she was itching to start telling fortunes with. Because this was also an informational meeting, she had also prepared an empty roster for all the new club members and no less than four different ideas for the club's first fundraiser. And, just as promised, there were refreshments, comprising of star-shaped sugar cookies, bite-sized cream puffs, a bag of corn chips and an enchanted punch bowl that kept the pink lemonade inside of it perfectly chilled. Everything was ready for what was going to be the greatest first meeting of the greatest club that Tropeville High had ever seen.
Except for one important thing that was missing.
"Why am I the only student here?!" Lemina demanded loudly to the empty seats around her, which earned her a shushing from the head librarian.
She let out a long sigh and went back to sulking, munching on one of the sugar cookies for comfort. After all, since the club had no budget yet, she had paid for them out of her own pocket. It would be a waste not to eat them.
"I just don't understand it. I posted flyers for this meeting on every classroom door, and it's been mentioned in the morning announcements every day for the past week... there's no way people couldn't have known about this! Where is everyone?"
Another minute passed, and then another student finally entered the library. "Ah!" Lemina exclaimed, jumping up out of her seat and running up to greet him with a bright smile. "Welcome~! Are you here for the Magic Club Meeting? You must be! Come and have a seat!"
The boy stared blankly, looking confused. "Eh? No, I'm here to do research. I have a midterm paper due next week..."
Lemina's smile vanished as quickly as it had appeared, replaced with a scowl. "Oh, is that so? Well, I guess this is a library..." She turned around, walking away and slumping back into her seat.
The student continued on his way, leaving Lemina alone. But a minute later, he returned.
"... ah, Ausa-sempai?" he asked meekly. "If you don't need those cookies, can I have one?"
She turned and glared at him. "... tch. Fine. Take it!" And with that, she flung the cookie at his head.
