Quirky Saigon

The entire office went to ho chi minh city for its yearly junket. It's a parallel universe where France meets the Tropics. Communism meets commercialism. And speeding bikes run over Blahnik-clad Filipino tourists (like my friend Katrina). Observe.

Blink and you're in a small town in the South of France.

Blink again and you see yourself about to be hit by speeding motorbikes who have no regard for pedestrian right of way.

Au Manoir de Khai. A Donatella Versace meets Jackie Collins type of bar-resto in Communist country.

En Tete. French cuisine in a restaurant with an ambiance straight from artsy Marais in Paris.

Do you see the Barbie on this wedding car?

Finally, authentic Vietnamese food in this dampa-style restaurant named Quan An Ngu. I ate a Pho noodle soup with cubes of cow's blood. Yum!

For me Ho Chi Minh City is the perfect destination for just lounging around, dining, having coffee and cocktails in a very European setting time-warped to the sixties. Don't expect malls and theme parks. Manage your expectations and you'll have a good time.
