I was but a mere toddler in the seventies when I would hear of those fabulous parties of "Manila Cafe Society"--Chona Kasten toasting crystal with the likes of Elvira Manahan, their faces awash with the scarlet hues of the glorious Manila Bay sunset. I would play these scenes in my head. And the accompanying music would always be Sergio Mendes, particularly "Love City". I imagine the ladies in funky pucci-esque dresses, their arms snapping and their hips swaying to the gentle yet infectious samba beats. Ah, Manila in the seventies. How beautiful it must have been.
Now comes Sergio Mendes Timeless. This compilation reintroduces his music to the hip-hop generation with the help of Justin Timberlake, Q-Tip and Jill Scott. Noteworthy is the new version of "Mas Que Nada", still faithful to the soul of the original version but given a new groove through a nice rap hook by Black Eyed Peas.
I suggest you get a copy, gather your "kumares", mix some cuba libres or scotch sevens and ENJOY! But play with caution. Your grandparents might just crash your party.
