A Gustatory Tour of France

Sep 29, 2005 20:25

My brother was very clear from the start: no scrimping when it comes to food during the trip. If it meant paying 60 euros for a gustatory adventure, so be it. Though I'll never admit this in front of him, I'd have to say that I'm glad that he convinced me to raise a few extra Euros for a real taste of what France has to offer. So far, these are the highlights.

CAFE MARLY, PARIS. Located in one wing of the Louvre Museum, this is one of the trendiest hotels in Paris. Designed by the same team responsible for Hotel Costes (which we attempted to book, unfortunately the waiting list was one month long), this mixture of old world decor and funky modern colors boasts of a magnificent view of the pyramids and the bejeweled Tour Eiffel. We treated Pierre, our host during our stay at the Southwest, to a very decadent dinner on the eve of his birthday. Food is excellent, they cook lamb quite well. Tip: give a 10 euro tip (like a brunei princess) and the next time you dine, you'll be assigned the best table and the cutest waiter in the house! (Ours looked like someone straight from the pages of Abercrombie and Fitch.

KONG, PARIS. At #1 Pont Neuf, this LVMH owned restaurant was designed by Philippe Starck. This is the restaurant made famous in Sex and the City--when Carrie met up with the ex-wife of Alexander Petrovsky. Unfortunately, the food falls below the expectations set by the decor. Kaya mabusog na lang kayo sa look.)

LE GRAND COLBERT, PARIS. Medyo mahirap-hirap hanapin 'to. It's next to the Bourse (Stock Exchange Building), at one of the side streets. This is the setting of that fateful date in "Something's Gotta Give" wherein Diane Keaton's character was having dinner with Keanu Reeves' when they were interrupted by the arrival of her true love, played by Jack Nicholson. She claimed that she would have cravings for the roast chicken. True enough, it was quite good. Although may sabaw na parang asado. Their home made ice cream is to die for.
