...Aaaaw. That was... O.o *shakes head* I have mentioned you're kind of excellent at the "painful but beautiful" variety of writing?

Excellent fic. I haven't played 2.0, don't even know Jet, so no clue how true to his character/personality you were... but your depiction was still a pretty amazing character sketch, one that made me sympathize a great deal with someone I could've otherwise cared less about.

It's interesting; a lot of the time I keep contrasting how Sam's different from Flynn, which I think is largely true... but this fic really reminded me of the similarities. Jet and Sam seem to be echoing their parents as they grow apart-- Sam trying to favor casual irresponsibility in a way that's heightened by the abandonment issues Flynn left him with, while Jet can't help looking at the larger picture, considering all the sides, and realizing that no, this really isn't what needs to be happening. I mean, normally I'm on Sam's side--and your fic wasn't unsympathetic towards him. :) But Jet's perspective gave an interesting angle on Sam's issues, and how they can really come around to hurt both him and the people close to him.

:D If I try for much more, I'll just end up ranting about the whole thing. Beautiful pacing, amazing characterizations. This dynamic didn't exist in my head until now, but you showed it excellently.

Thanks!

2.0, being a FPS, isn't all that big on characterization. Ghost in the Machine, the follow-up comic works better for that, but is a massive Mind Screw. If you want character development in a game, get Bioware, Squaresoft, LucasArts on a good day, or old-school Sierra. The devs, though, had massive amounts of fun because it's loaded with computer puns and as many shout-outs to the 82 film as Legacy. Boxleitner must either be really fond of the franchise or have hellish bills, because he voiced Alan on this one. Cindy Morgan also voiced Ma3a, an AI unit that acts as Jet's goal and guide.

The opening scene has Jet hunched over the Tron video game, but ending it when he gets a call from Alan. Turns out Alan tried to angle a promotion opportunity for Jet and Jet turned down the opportunity. Jet likes his position with the game division and wants to stay put. Alan grumbles, "You're as bad as Flynn" (in light of Legacy, the heckle is "which one?"). A few seconds later, some thugs storm the lab, there's a struggle, and when Jet races down there to find Alan, he gets zapped.

The main difference between 2.0 canon and Legacy canon is Lora's fate, as I mentioned. In 2.0, she was killed in an accident with the laser, but part of her was fused with the AI Ma3a (justifying why Cindy Morgan is voicing her). Jet was about 12 when this happened, and it's implied to have driven a wedge between him and his dad. Other than that? The canons seem surprisingly compatible, especially since Ghost In the Machine states Flynn stepped down from Encom and mysteriously vanished. (2.0 gives the date of Flynn's vanishing act as June 1990, though)

Jet is a pretty laid back guy, much quieter and more introspective than Sam, though still prone to acting out and causing trouble when it all gets too much. One of the in-game emails you read is from LAPD stating that Alan left his wallet at the precinct office when paying Jet's bail, for example. Despite this, Jet and Alan really do love one another, even though it's hard for them to be on the same page. Ghost in the Machine also hinted he had an artistic bent and vivid imagination.

The actual argument in the bar? Well, I've had very similar arguments with my twin. I love her to death, but she and I have had some fantastic rows over following one's passions versus paying one's bills.

Huh. That sounds highly canon-compatible--especially when you consider that by the time Legacy comes around, we don't actually know what's up with Lora (laser accident could've been a thing offscreen). :D And definitely agreed on the excellence that is Bioware (and etc.) RPGs.
