Hey kids, just like that, we got a live one! It's probably for the best that Sharapova played while I was at work today, because I would've been under a lot of stress watching a match with 21 breaks of serve out of 30 games total. The stats suggest that both players went for an unrelenting risk-reward style despite apparently windy conditions affecting the game. Somehow, at the end of the lengthy and exhaustingly powerful affair, Maria came through at 6-4 6-7(5) 6-2 over Klara Zakopalova to earn a berth in the quarterfinals.

Eight players remain in the women's draw, and on Wednesday Sharapova will have to remove another one of them, this time Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. Kanepi is already in the midst of her best career showing at a slam, so she shouldn't much mind when she is rightfully crushed. I hope that she doesn't put up much of a fight.

In a sport whose ladies have failed in the last few years to produce any characters dominant enough to become new household names, Sharapova the highest remaining seed in this tournament and has much support as the favorite to win. Soon, soon, she will, and I will savor the long-awaited day. Remember that Maria has three major titles in her career: one at each of the others besides the French Open.
