When it's getting near 100 degrees in the middle of the day, getting off the court quickly is a huge help. So Maria decided to trounce her second-round opponent 6-0 6-1, much like the first, in a jaunty 64 minutes. Staying fresh while steamrolling young'uns is going to give her a definite leg up when the big cats come to play in the later rounds.
So far, the Australian Open has been fairly quiet with respect to big upsets. Mardy Fish went out early, along with reigning US Open champion Samantha Stosur, but very few other top-25 players have bitten the dust. While it's always nice to see a potential looming problem get shamed off the court by a nobody, I guess we can look forward to some very intense matches in the later rounds.
Up next: #30 Angelique Kerber of Germany. Her career has been unspectacular to date with the exception of a semifinals appearance at the 2011 US Open, i.e., the other hard-court major. Still, not exactly with the fear striking. That match oughtta be (for me in Hamburg) in the wee hours of Saturday morning, I'd expect, so hopefully I'll wake up to good news again. Don't get me wrong, victory is most definitely assured for Sharapova, I just want good news in the form of another quick match.
Sharapova commented in the interview after her last match that she's looking forward to playing in her first olympics! That's a good reason to tune in this summer to London 2012.
