River’s Run

Her name is not Song. It never has been, never will be.

It’s just something she will - is - known by. It makes things simpler. For the future, for her family, for herself.

For him.

Sometimes, albeit briefly, she wishes that things could be easy. That life could happen in a linear form, so that they could both know when and where they stand.

Lazier people would describe it as ‘timey wimey, wibbly wobbly’. She knows otherwise. Understands the flux, the complexity, the way time folds in on itself and bends and twists when necessary. How it appears to be a gibberish mess to the uneducated, but is really a thing of beauty. Entropy dictates that objects naturally find the status that requires the least energy and thus, the same applies to time itself.

And that means it applies to her relationship with the Doctor. Naturally.

There’s nothing easy about having a relationship with a time traveller. Especially one as flawed as the Doctor. He veers between demigod and humble explorer and yet, he can never get the balance quite right. That’s what she’s there for. It’s the position she’s chosen for herself. After all, he cannot be trusted to look after himself; he’s far too irresponsible for that. He doesn’t have any of his own kind left to look after him. They’re long gone. And if not her, who else?

Besides, he’s been a part of her life since she was born. She loves him entirely but it hurts. As she grows inexplicably ever closer to him, he’s growing distant and suspicious.

There will come a day when she knows everything about him and he knows nothing about her. And vice versa, for that matter. They’re hurtling in opposite directions and there’s nothing she can do to control it. It’s the path that fate has drawn out for them, the path that upsets the Universe the least. Instead of causing major damage to time, it causes mere ripples. In comparison, anyway. Their relationship was always going to be dangerous from the offset.

But she kind of likes that. The complexity. It makes things interesting, exciting. Never knowing whether or not you’re coming or going.

All you need to do is make sure you have a very good diary on you at all times.

Her life has never been simple. Even now, she’s having to tell her own father that it’s her birthday. Simply because he doesn’t know who she is and what she means to him. It feels like they’ve known each other forever and a day, which should be true. He is, after all, her daddy. But still, he doesn’t trust her, not really. As far as he’s concerned, she’s just a mysterious figure who crops up in their good friend, the Doctor’s, life occasionally.

But that’s about to change. She knows it, can feel it right down to her very core.

The dates match up. It’s Devil’s Run. A good man has indeed gone to war.

And that means one thing: it’s time.

Time for the truth to start spilling out, for answers to be revealed. Not all of them, of course. Some things are better left unsaid. Others… well. There’s such a thing as revealing too much in one go.

Melody Pond checks her features in a small mirror before nodding decisively.

She’s ready, but oh, how she wishes for another day of simplicity. But those days are over.

It’s only going to get worse from here.
