Summary: Skipping out on Boy Scouts is a gateway to so-called deviant lifestyles...?
The summer sun beat down on Jeph's back as his feet pounded across the pavement. Arms spread like wings extended by his skateboard, he took the steps leading down into Memory Grove Park in threes. His backpack nearly slid off his shoulder as he scaled the final five steps and had an up close and personal experience, as in splat, with the paved trail leading up into the sliver of Utah wilderness. He threw his skateboard down and shoved off towards the trees. Yeah, he was pretty sure the den leader hadn't seen him sneak off from the Capital tour... but there was no such thing as being too safe. Besides... one, who books educational tours in the middle of summer and two, boy scouts were suppose to go out and get their hands dirty or learn to tie knots and shit... not tour government buildings that schools took kids to every few months. Jeph was out of Orem town... and even if it meant being grounded for the next couple months by both of his parents he was going to see the city; or at least one of its most awesome parks anyway.
After at least ten minutes of skating, Jeph stopped. Not even bothering to move off the trail, he tugged at the knot of his scout scarf and quickly unbuttoned the beige, button up, scout-issued shirt. He'd foregone his badge sash, so at least he didn't have to wrestle with that shit. Jeph rolled the items up into a ball and knelt beside his backpack. He drew out his favorite hypercolor shirt. Yeah, yeah... that shit was like a decade past but it was just so damn cool. His pants were at his ankles before he'd even thought to look around. Shrugging off the feeling he was no longer alone, Jeph quickly stepped into his denim board shorts and proceeded to shove his uniform into his bag.
As soon as the laughter started, Jeph realized exactly why he'd felt like someone was watching him. Shit, he seriously didn't want his day ruined by a bunch of SLC assholes making fun of him. Not cool. And sure enough as soon as he turned around, he faced five kids around his age... though by their clothing he could tell they were all pretty much everything he'd ever wanted to be. If only Bert was with him, maybe they wouldn't give him any crap. Shoulders slumping, Jeph jutted his chin out defiantly.
"Your momma forget you at the temple?" One of them cracked almost immediately.
Jeph thumbed at his CTR ring and pinched his face into a scowl. It wasn't like he'd chosen the life he was born into. He wasn't the product that his mom and dad thought he was. He knew this deep inside, but the rest of the world? The rest of the world barely caught on. Before he could come up with a reply, another one of the kids snorted out another joke.
"...dude, that's a sweet board... you even know how to ride that thing?"
"...yeah." Jeph replied wishing that his voice didn't sound so fucking meek and shy. The two girls that were with them giggled and rolled their eyes. Whatever, he thought, it wasn't like he cared if they liked him or not. The were all just elitist assholes. Everyone was uncool at one point and if they couldn't admit that shit... to hell with them.
One of them stepped forward and immediately Jeph took a hesitant step backwards. Sure, not only were they going to humiliate him... they were gonna mug him. He'd end up calling his parents... getting caught not only sluffing scouts, but not watching fucking Legacy with his troupe, running off alone... the list went on and on. They'd take his bass for sure... and maybe never let him have it back.
"...what's your name?" The one that had stepped forward asked.
Jeph's mouth twitched as he nodded dumbly. He caught the rest of the group casting the guy scandalized looks. One of the girls even went as far as to cover her mouth and mutter "Oh, God..."
"Dan... never mind these assholes..." He eyed Jeph's bag. "... running away or just off?" A smirk played over his features. When Jeph didn't reply, Dan took another step forward. "...c'mon I don't bite... much... you gonna talk?"
One of his eyebrows shot up at that. He didn't bite much? That was soo... hot? Stomach twisting, Jeph tried to force a smile that didn't betray him. "... just didn't want to stay inside today... that's all..."
"You light up?"
"Um?"
One of the guys punched Dan's shoulder and laughed. "See, man?"
Dan let his gaze drift over Jeph then looked back at his friends. "... what I see is a day of watching you assholes make our with your girlfriends if I hang around you..." He redirected his gaze at Jeph. "...how about it, kid?"
"I'm not a kid!" Jeph immediately defended causing the group to cackle once again.
Winking at the other four, Dan stepped forward and motioned down the path with his head. "Wanna show me what you can do with that thing?" He asked vaguely pointing in the direction of Jeph's skateboard.
More than a little nervous, Jeph kicked his board into position and headed down the path with his backpack in tow. He didn't much care if Dan followed or not... as long as they all left him alone.
But sure enough, once he was around ten feet away from them all... Jeph heard the distinct sound of gravel and pavement crunching behind him. Huffing out an exasperated sigh, he jerked to a stop and scooped up his board once more. Nostrils flaring, he wheeled about to face his hecklers and came face to face with just one.
"Y'know... you're kinda cute when you're all mad like that..."
Jeph opened his mouth to retort but the words just wouldn't come. He couldn't even move. This guy... this Dan thought he was cute? Heart thumping and bumping loudly in his chest, Jeph took a steadying breath and then another and another. And with each tick of the clock, Dan's smirk deepened.
The perception twisted moment of time rushed to an end when Dan stepped into Jeph's personal bubble and pressed a dry but urgent seeming kiss to the corner of his mouth. It took all that he was worth for Jeph to not let his lips and body follow the other boy. Shaking, he stepped back and muttered. "I... I gotta go..."
Before he could make his escape, Dan grabbed his wrist and pulled him back. "...got a pen, boy scout?" He winked.
Blinking dumbly, Jeph nodded and glanced instinctively at his duffel bag. Dan nodded with a shit-eating grin and reached out for the bag... and Jeph, Jeph just let him have it. He watched in horror as the other boy began rooting around in his stuff and ended up shocked when the havoc and mocking didn't follow.
Withdrawing a pen, Dan handed Jeph back the bag with a sly wink. He took Jeph's hand in his own and scribbled his email address in choppy letters across his palm. Licking his lips, Dan gave him the once over before tossing the writing utensil haphazardly over his shoulder into the vegetation along the path. "...shoot me an IM later tonight, kid..."
I'm not a kid! The protest died a quick death on Jeph's now paralyzed lips. He narrowed his eyes in confusion as Dan winked at him one more time then headed back down the path to meet up with his friends. When Jeph could neither see nor hear the group any longer, he brought his fingers up to his lips. He could still feel the warm press of the other boy’s mouth on his and the rush it had given him hadn't dissipated in the moments past.
Choose the right? Fuck that, he thought as he thought about kissing, like really kissing, the other boy again. If feeling like that was wrong, he didn't want to be right.
