Chemistry Question

So I'm working for an environmental engineering company now and it's got me thinking.
I've heard about how baking soda is an environmentally friendly alternative to abrasive cleansers like Comet but now I'm not so sure.
Did you know that baking soda can be mined or created artificially? Artificial baking soda is made by mixing sodium chloride (salt), limestone and ammonia - how good is all that for the environment? Companies like this mine trona which is used to manufacture soda and I'm not sure that mines are so good for Planet Earth either.
So if you know of any chemists or informed people who can tell me whether baking soda requires less energy to create, is less harmful to manufacture and is better to apply and dispose of than the Mr. Clean alternative, I'd really appreciate it.

A conundrum indeed - for the time being, I'll ensure I don't litter and such.
