The Best Birthday Ever

Sep 13, 2015 23:22

A/N: This was written for a good friend of mine on Tumblr for her birthday. I swear angst is my thing, yet I keep finding myself writing fluffy DaiMao fics even though I can't write fluff for my life. Now, I warn you all: this will be ridiculously cheesy, so approach with caution...

Kyousuke woke up in the morning before his alarm clock went off, his anxiousness getting the better of him. His eyes fluttered open as the corners of his lips turned upwards in a radiant smile.

Today was his birthday! And to say that he was excited would be an understatement.

Birthdays had always been Kyousuke’s favorite occasion growing up. As a child, his parents threw him elaborate celebrations with jumpers, goodie bags, and lots of presents. He had long outgrown such festivities, yet that didn’t make it any less significant, and his successive birthdays had all been very special. Particularly since he started dating his current sweetheart, Watanabe Daisuke. Daichan, as he preferred to be called, never failed to make Kyousuke’s birthdays memorable since the past five years or so that they had been dating. The younger man was certain that this year would be no different, and was very eager to see what his boyfriend had planned this time around.

Kyousuke jumped out of bed and quickly went into the restroom for his morning routine. Daisuke wasn’t in their room, and judging by the ruckus coming from the kitchen, the young man assumed that he was preparing breakfast for him.

Maybe he’s making me breakfast in bed like last year, Kyousuke thought.

“Morning babe, up already?” Daisuke greeted when his boyfriend eventually joined him in the kitchen downstairs.

“Morning love,” Kyousuke returned, looking over the other man’s shoulder to see what he had prepared. The big smile he was sporting faltered slightly at the sight as Daisuke turned around to kiss him.

The older man sensed that his boyfriend was a bit off, “You okay?” he asked with concern.

Kyousuke let out a breathy chuckle, “Y-yeah, of course I am. Is that what you’re making for breakfast?” he asked skeptically, pointing a finger at the small pot with a couple of hard-boiled eggs in it.

“Well yeah, I just needed a quick breakfast today, I have an early meeting I have to get to. If I knew you were going to wake up so early, I would’ve made some for you too,” Daisuke replied apologetically.

Kyousuke was taken aback. Could his boyfriend have forgotten it was his birthday?

“Um, its okay I guess…I’m not really hungry anyway.”

“Ah, now I feel guilty,” Daisuke exclaimed as he placed the pot of eggs under running sink water. “Listen, how about I take you out for dinner this evening to make up for it, hm?”

Kyousuke was really disappointed at this point. It seemed that his lover really had forgotten…

“Daichan, do you know what today is?” Kyousuke asked, hoping to jog his failing memory.

“Well, yeah, it’s Wednesday.”

The younger man stared at him with wide eyes for a moment and was about to scold him, since, well, he forgot his birthday, but Daisuke cut him short before he could begin.

“Sorry babe, I’d love to stay and chat, but I need to go. I’m running late for work,” he said, leaving a peck on his boyfriend’s cheek before taking his eggs to-go on the way out.

Kyousuke sighed, deflated. It was the first time his lover had forgotten his special day, but he figured since he’d never done it before, he would excuse him just this once and tell him later. Besides, it was still early. He was sure that at least his friends would remember and do something special for him. Maybe today wouldn’t turn out to be such a bummer after all.

Kyousuke hurried upstairs to get ready for work, taking extra care of his appearance since he always overdressed on his birthday. He sported a big grin as he walked into the office and cheerfully greeted his colleagues, making his way to his cubicle.

“Oh, hey man,” his buddy Koni greeted as he took his seat across from him. “That’s a nice suit you got on there, is today a special occasion or something?”

Kyousuke sulked. It seemed like his best friend didn’t remember his birthday either. “No, nothing special. Just a regular day, no occasion at all! Why would you think that?” he replied sarcastically.

“I see. Well you look nice, though!” Koni said before getting straight to work.

Kyousuke sat back in his seat, pondering for a moment how it was possible that both his boyfriend and his best friend could’ve forgotten his birthday. It was disheartening, to say the least. Without thinking too much about it-since he had a lot of work to do-he pulled out some files and got started for the day.

A few hours later, a delivery boy walked into the office with a huge bouquet of red roses. Kyousuke perked up at the sight, believing that Daisuke remembered his birthday after all and had sent the flowers to his workplace to surprise him.

“I have a delivery for-”

“That would be me!” Kyousuke shouted happily as he practically ran over to take the bouquet. He had gained the attention of everyone in the office, who were cat-whistling and teasing him about it. Although Kyousuke was a bit shy, he proudly took the roses from the confused delivery person and didn’t hesitate to open the card and read it aloud (to show off).

“Sir, I don’t think that-”

“My boyfriend sent these to me, he’s such a romantic! Let’s see here…the card reads: I must be the luckiest man in the entire world…” he quoted; his colleagues started catwhistling, eagerly awaiting him to continue. Kyousuke felt like he was on top of the world. “Saying that you make my life complete is an understatement, I love you with my entire heart…” As he continued to read on, however, his smile started to fade away when he realized something important. “Happy anniversary…to my wife? Oh my god…”

It wasn’t his.

“Oh, that must be mine!” one of his female colleagues said with a blush as she got up to snatch the bouquet away. “My husband must have sent these to me for our anniversary today.”

The office was stilled to silence as people either tried to hold in their laughter or sympathized with Kyousuke, feeling his embarrassment second-hand.

“I’m very sorry, I didn’t mean to! I-I thought my boyfriend…”

“Kyou-chan, we know what happened, buddy. Maybe you should just get back to work,” Koni whispered, trying to bring the awkward situation to an end.

Kyousuke hurried to his seat, his cheeks burning bright red. He had never been so humiliated in his entire life! And to think he really believed that Daisuke would be thoughtful enough to send him flowers on his so-called special day. Kyousuke scoffed inwardly. At that point, he was sure that nobody had bothered to remember his birthday, and got back to work to forget his disappointment (and not to mention his embarrassment) about the whole ordeal.

-

Kyousuke left the office a little later than usual. Koni, his supposed friend, left him with a bulk of extra paperwork to fill out right before his shift was going to end. It was bad enough that he forgot his birthday, but he had to go the whole nine yards and torment him too.

Some friend he turned out to be… Kyousuke thought bitterly. He wasn’t planning on letting him get away with it easily, that’s for sure.

As Kyousuke walked to his car, he got a call from his mother and hurriedly answered it, eager to get some sort of birthday wish. Leave it to his parents to never let him down.

“Moshi moshi!”

“Mao-kun, how are you doing son?” his mother asked, calling him by his childhood nickname. It was nostalgic and made him especially emotional.

“I’m doing well, mother. I’m so happy that at least you haven’t forgotten what today is,” Kyousuke replied, convinced and touched that his mom was calling to wish him many more returns.

“Heh? I don’t understand…what day is it? Is there something important going on today that I should know about?”

Kyousuke stopped mid-step before reaching his car, his face going blank.

Even my mom forgot! “Er, no, nothing important. Just forget about it. How are you and dad doing?” he replied for a quick change of subject.

“If you say so, son.” The young man’s expression distorted with annoyance. “Anyway dear, I have a favor to ask of you. Would you be a doll and pick up your father’s prescription at the pharmacy and bring it over on your way? The car is giving us a bit of trouble and your father is with the mechanic right now to get it fixed.”

Being the filial son he was, Kyousuke readily accepted his mother’s request, albeit he was not too keen on meeting his parents right now for obvious reasons. Of all people in the world, he never expected that they would forget his birthday. His mother is the one who gave birth to him after all! Did it mean nothing to her?!

-

Kyousuke drove over to the pharmacy, pondering the happenings of that day. First, his boyfriend, then his best friend, and now his parents. Come to think of it, even his colleagues and manager at work had forgotten, and they always scheduled little celebrations for employees on their birthdays. Kyousuke wasn’t sure what to think at this point. Did he somehow wake up in some alternate universe or something? Almost doubting himself, he even double-checked the date on his cell phone to confirm that he was not the one who was mistaken.

-

Kyousuke parked his car across the street from the local pharmacy, and had barely crossed when someone bumped into him, nearly toppling him to the ground.

“Oh, I’m sorry I hope I didn’t-”

“Takkun, is that you?” Kyousuke asked cautiously, shocked to see one of his best childhood pals in such a random manner. After all, it had been years since they saw each other last, ever since Takkun went up to Hokkaido for his university studies.

“Kyou-chan?”

Kyousuke nodded, nearly in tears. The guys were quick to embrace, ecstatic to have seen one another again.

“Ah, it looks like I ruined part of the surprise,” Takkun sighed.

Kyousuke lifted a brow. “Surprise? What surprise?”

Takkun immediately panicked when he realized that he almost let the cat out of the bag, and rubbed the back of his head with a nervous laugh. “Did I say surprise…? Ah, I only meant I was on my way to your parent’s place right now to surprise you with my visit!”

“Well, it’s quite a surprise alright!” Kyousuke exclaimed happily. “But I think I heard you say part of the surprise…what else was there?”

Takkun was in a bind, unsure of what to say. “A-ah…well…hey Kyousuke, weren’t you supposed to pick up your dad’s prescription from the pharmacy or something? Don’t let me hold ya back buddy! We can always meet up at a better time.”

Kyousuke’s eyebrows tangled with confusion. “Wait…how did you know I was supposed to go to the pharmacy?”

Takkun paled. “U-u-uh…I just had a hunch?”

At this point, Kyousuke was sure that there was something fishy going on, and considering the context of that day, he had a vague idea about what was happening. “You’re coming with me,” he demanded as he grabbed his friend by the arm and pushed him into his car.

“What are you doing?!”

“My place or my parents’?” Kyousuke asked nonchalantly, fastening his seatbelt

“W-what are you taking about?” Takkun stuttered with an anxious gulp.

“You know very well what I’m talking about.”

There was no use trying to deny it any longer. “Your parents’ house,” Takkun submitted dejectedly.

Adrenaline rushed through Kyousuke’s veins as he hurried over to his family’s home with excitement. Everything made perfect sense now. When the boys reached their destination, he quickly got out of his car with Takkun trailing behind him, and ran for the door like a child going to Disneyland. He didn’t even bother to knock, pushing it open with full force instead.

In an instant, the lights turned on and screams of “SURPRISE!” filled the air.

Despite not being completely surprised (since he had anticipated as much), Kyousuke was shocked and ecstatic to see that all his friends and family were gathered to celebrate his existence.

“Happy birthday, baby,” Daisuke said as he approached his beloved with a party hat to give him a big kiss. Kyousuke was touched and his eyes started to water with tears of joy.

“You totally tricked me!” the birthday boy cried, light-heartedly slapping his boyfriend’s shoulder. “Whose idea was it to do all this?”

“It was all Daisuke’s idea, dear,” Kyousuke’s mom said when she approached him with a smile and gave him a big hug.

“Yeah, and he even sent me a plane ticket so I can come here today as part of the surprise,” Takkun added.

“He had everything arranged, he told us to act like we’d forgotten your birthday so you can be really surprised. He loves you a lot, you know.” Koni cut in as well.

Kyousuke’s smile stretched from ear to ear, and he wiped a tear from his beautiful face as he looked at the love of his life, the latter shrugging his shoulders modestly.

“I can’t believe you even got my colleagues at work involved in this!” Kyousuke stated in awe.

His manager, Takiguchi was there too, and added, “About that Kyousuke-san, we’ve arranged your little birthday bash for tomorrow morning at the office. You didn’t really think we’d forget about you, did you?”

“Thank you, Takiguchi-san! It is not necessary!”

Before anyone could say another word, the door to the kitchen swung open and Kyousuke’s father came out holding a large cake lit with candles, and everybody began singing the classic celebratory song.

Kyousuke never felt more loved in his entire life. He blew out the candles and made a wish. Afterwards, Daisuke was the first to give him a gift.

“Happy birthday, my love. I hope you like it,” Daisuke said as he handed his boyfriend a cute gift bag.

Kyousuke took it with a grin and pulled out a small velvet box. He looked up at Daisuke with wide eyes, and the latter urged him to open it.

“Oh, it’s beautiful!” Kyousuke exclaimed upon sight of a glimmering gold, “D” pendant necklace.

“I got it to remind you that you’ll be mine forever,” Daisuke stated sweetly, taking the necklace and placing it on his lover’s neck.

Kyousuke turned around and embraced his beloved tightly, saying, “You just made my wish come true.”

When he blew out his candles, he wished that he could be with Daisuke forever, and his boyfriend’s gift confirmed that for him.

“You made mine come true the moment I met you. Happy birthday, darling,” he declared with a kiss.

Everyone gave them a round of applause, and the couple finally realized that other people were around, pulling back with shy blushes and slight chuckles.

What he thought would end up being a disaster turned out to be Kyousuke’s best birthday ever.

The end.
