Mini Game Review: Aquaria

I just finished this game and before I say anything else let me stress that is quite hard, but it was also immensely satisfying. Aquaria is at its heart a personal quest by the mermaid Naija to find her own family. It's a little light on character development but the absolutely gorgeous visual and music and immensely enjoyable, if occasionally frustrating, gameplay make up for any other lackings. The gameplay is sort of a cross between the old school Ecoo the Dolphin games and an underwater Legend of Zelda. The main theme is exploration of the large aquatic world of aquaria, each massive "dungeon" giving Naija more powers to explore and survive in her quest for knowledge both of herself and her world.

The most amazing thing about the game is that (apart from things like voice acting and testing) the entire game was made by two guys. Aquaria is the pinnacle of Indie gaming and with an ending that left me both sobbing and desperate for a sequel. More please!

review, yay!, art, games
