I had the weirdest experience today that made me feel like crap.
So I was queuing at Mac's wanting to buy a small packet of fries to satisfy my craving when I started to observe the people around me. Over in the next counter, the staff was putting together a Mc Chicken meal for the customer. As this girl/lady (the customer) dug into her wallet to come up with the cash for the meal, she realised that she didn't have enough money. She happened to see me looking as the looked over her shoulder and turned back to the staff and was naturally feeling embarrassed (read: like the crap off the wad of gum on the bottom of my shoe!). The staff too was feeling awkward and the situation ended (or where it left off when I was leaving) with her asking the staff to just get her the burger for 2 bucks.
I felt REALLY uncomfortable after that scene. Should I have offered to top off the remaining amount? But that could make her feel like she's receiving charity and alert those around us (Mac's isn't exactly an un-populated place) of her predicament. You definitely couldn't blame the staff for not doing anything to help her like writing off the difference cos she could really get into trouble for that. God knows I too have encountered similar situations and felt very embarrassed after that. It's like one moment I have money and the next I'm wrong.
These are just what-ifs, the whole scenario has played out and I chose to walk off. All I know is I felt really lousy after seeing that. Tell me what you would have done/what I should have done.
