Excitement Over Books & Reading

Jan 25, 2009 02:58

The comics shop and Richland County Public Library both had high-profile sales, with the comics being limited exclusives and the library unloading TONS of golden pages for $1 per book. OH HELL YES. The new reading list is as follows:

Greg Rucka, Yoshitaka Amano: "Elektra and Wolverine: The Redeemer"
-This even exists?! I need to read this before the Bizarroverse demands it back!

Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale: "Wolverine and Gambit: Victims"
-I don't have a thing for Wolverine team-ups, he just happens to have great partners and handlers. Also, Jeph Loeb has yet to do wrong.

Jim Massey, Robbi Rodriguez: "Stephen Colbert's Tek Jansen" (2&3)
-Sbarro got me started on this funny series last year, and now I'm caught up with its run. Only two more to go!

Naomi Shihab Nye: "What Have You Lost?"
-Thought this was a hardcover collection of her stuff, but nay, I simply opened it to a page with her stuff on it (it's really an anthology deal).

Britannica Great Books: "The Great Conversation"
-Just a whole ideology rant about western education and expansion, the role of education, adulthood, and other "futureshock" issues

Kahlil Gibran: "The Procession," "Thoughts & Meditations," "Wisdom of Gibran," "Spirits Rebellious," "Nymphs of the Valley"
-I loved "The Prophet," which Mikie's mom gave me, so why not all of his other writings? The price was right!

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, "A Coney Island of the Mind," "San Francisco Poems"
-Always liked his stuff from afar, now to dive in!

Reinhold Neibuhr, "The Children of Light and The Children of Darkness"
-Writes a lot about democracy and theology, and seems to have some peculiar opinions about Jews.

T.S. Eliot, "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats"
-There were two copies with different sets of illustrations, so I picked up both and will give one to Sevandra (whichever they like more)

Czeslaw Milosz: "Bells In Winter"
-Unknown poetry, but Czechs tend to write strong to get published here, so I'll bite.

This is all on top of the excellent comics Severin, Burt, and Cari have lent me (Samurai Executioner, Hitman, and Bleach, respectively), as well as my finally starting Pat Conroy's "The Prince of Tides" about four years after Laura gave it to me. That is probably the coolest thing about a lot of the items on my list: they're connected to people. Anyone can live a million lives through their library, but when those lives pair up with flesh and blood personalities, the world looks even richer.

If you'll excuse me, some old friends are calling. I hope they know I have the momentum of the Best Year Ever on my side!
