Moving house

Jan 31, 2005 16:25

It's been so long since I've posted about anything important that I've got myself totally intimidated to do so. So there's nothing for it but to abandon hope of catching up (I'll grow old and die waiting for the time to write posts that catch up completely) and just jump in and write something and hope that I can fill in as needed going along.

I'm still working, though not nearly as hard as before. I'm starting to grow tired of things today and I was grumpy in syntax class for unfair reasons (no good account of Binding in this theory, which I otherwise like). The ACL deadline passed two weeks ago after much drama on the day it was due.

I've had a very nice week, but busy -- this time not with schoolwork: exterra and thevorak and I are moving house at the end of February, moving to a new neighborhood but staying roughly in the same area. The new place is a house of our own (not an apartment) with two floors, three bedrooms, and an office (a "Victorian farmhouse" style). It's been a bit stressful -- especially the decision-making around are-we-going-to-take-this-one, and I have been less than an icon of tolerance in the process.

Many of my friends live in our new neighborhood: we'll be a few blocks from imtboo's new place, and we have a long list of non-LJ friends who also live in the neighborhood, which will be two blocks from a nice grocery store, five blocks from an organic co-op, and four blocks from one Trader Yosef. It is good for bus-ing it to the U -- much better than the old place -- and has a nice warm kitchen with a big tile countertop.

Other things, in no particular order:
  • Things have been very good with imtboo: we're comfortable together in so many ways. She and I are so alike in the way we think about the world, and yet different enough to be valuable. And she's smart and funny and hawt. Plus also she laughs at my jokes, and that is a thing not to be sneered at. She makes me happy.
  • I gave a belated birthday + $WinterHoliday gift to blackwingedboy: The first two volumes of Finder and the Warren Ellis what-if-comics-had-never-invented-superheroes $1.25 teaser (there's a pretty good review of the Frank Ironwine collaboration in it between WE and Finder's Carla Speed McNeil.
  • I had a nasty scratch under one eye for almost a week that boiled up and started to be the sort of thing that kind people would ask me about with concern. It has gone away now.
  • I haven't been keeping up with any of the RSS feeds I read for the last few weeks; it's been too crazy and not important enough to catch up on. Instead, I read books. I think this is probably healthy.
