Well, I've been back at school for nearly two full weeks. Classes are going fine, but will be a bit harder than last semester. My weekly class load schedule is WAY imbalanced. Mondays and Wednesdays are horrible, particularly Wednesday when I have three hours of class, then an hour off for lunch, then another class, then another hour off before my last class. It's nice having a lunch break, but having two one-hour breaks like that is just annoying. Plus, 4 out of 5 of those classes almost always have homework. On the flip side, Thursdays are awesome. I have two classes, one of which I can usually leave pretty early once I am done with the week's assignments (it is a computer lab class).
Today started out absolutely horribly. I woke up to my alarm, turned it off, rolled over and fell back asleep and didn't awake again until my phone rang: work calling to find out where I was since I was already 15 minutes late at that point. I sprung out of bed, dressed, brushed my teeth, grabbed my backpack and ran out the door. SO, I get to work 30 minutes late, and the only other girl working in my department is the new girl who just started last week. One of the other supervisors was there helping her, but really, neither were experienced with the office supplies area. When I walk in to the store, I see them helping a customer and can tell there is a problem, so I immediately go over.
The angered lady (the customer) says, "I'm looking for chisel-head calligraphy markers. I just bought some here two days ago."
My first thought upon hearing "calligraphy" is 'Art Department.' She says, "I've been down there and they didn't have what I wanted. I know I you've got them in your store, but NO ONE seems to know where they are. I think they are up here." (Art is downstairs... she was sure it wasn't there.)
I replied, "Ma'am, the only chisel-head markers we have up here are permanent markers, dry-erase markers, and highlighters - nothing else. We have no calligraphy-anything up here. That is all down in Art."
"No, I'm not looking for permanent markers, I'm looking for multi-colored calligraphy markers."
"Those are down in Art." Sensing she wasn't going to bite, I just started walking toward the stairwell despite her claims it wasn't downstairs. I walk down and find one revolving case of markers, but they weren't chisel-head. Then, as I walk back to look elsewhere, an Art Department worker found them. GEE, lady, where did I tell you they were? She never apologized for her attitude, despite her being 100% wrong - not that I expected she would.
So that started my work day. After the girl and I (and eventually the other new guy) spent an hour stocking all the shelves, I began looking through faxed orders to fill. There were still a few from yesterday, so I was looking at them first. The first one I gave to the new girl because it was simple, the second was for the Art Department so I took it downstairs, and then the third... The third one in the stack was for 35 composition notebooks. At the bottom of the order in big, capital letters read: "RUSH! Need by 1/18 noon!" I looked at my watch and it was 9:20. Our delivery guy leaves at 9:30 for his morning deliveries and does not run again until 1:00PM. I ran down to the loading dock to find him. He told me, "I have lots of deliveries today, so if I don't have it in 10 minutes, it won't happen until after lunch." I then ran to the stock room to look for 35 notebooks. There were no boxes of that kind of notebook. At all. The only hope was that there was still a box by the shelf since it was the end of our busy period (beginning of semester rush). I go to the shelf and there are 37 composition notebooks, so I take all but two, charge them out, box them, and run them down to the dock. I got there literally with about 1 minute to spare as the delivery guy had just finished loading the last cart of deliveries.
RUSH orders are to be done as soon as they arrive, they are NOT to be put somewhere in the middle of the stack. It's a miracle I found it when I did, or someone would have had to have dealt with a nasty phone call later. Turns out, the lady that ordered them called an hour after I sent off her order to say she could come pick them up if it had not already left. o.O
In other news, I'm looking into studying abroad next year. Right now, I am thinking the somewhere in the UK. We'll see.
