Another Year

14 years ago today things changed.

14 years ago today my cousin Evelyn (27), her partner Michael (27), and their middle child Michelle (7), were shopping for a memorial wreath for Michael's father who had died a few days before. Darren (11) and Lauren (11 weeks) were at home with Evelyn's parents.

14 years ago today there were at the wrong place at the wrong time when two you men walked into the fish shop in which they were. Those two young men, dressed as delivery-men didn't have fish for the shop, they had a hidden bomb.

14 years ago today nine people died. Including Evelyn, Michael, and Michelle. Evelyn's mother's brother helped pull them out, but didn't recognise them. A cousin serving in the police had to identify them as it was deemed too bad for a civilian to see. The three coffins that sat in my Uncle and Aunt's living-room were sealed. I've been told a few details of the bodies and they prey on my mind.

For those not directly involved the memories of the bomb in Frizzel's Fish Shop on the Shankill Road have faded. Some of us will carry it to the end.
