Wait a Little Longer - A Brenda/Sharon Ficlet

A/N: It helps if you at least know the basic premise of 'Imagine Me and You'.

Wait a Little Longer

Fritz was having a party. Or, as he would tell it, a small get together over dinner to celebrate his wife's birthday. Brenda was not impressed. Her husband had blindsided her by inviting her squad over and not telling her until the afternoon of the event. She wished she could have invited Sharon. Not out of any true display of friendship, but more to show the brunette that she was far more put together - and dare she say - likable than the Captain thought. Later, she would wonder why she cared so much what the other woman thought of her.

The second time Brenda should have invited Sharon to dinner was after her meeting with the mayor. She at least owed the Captain a decent meal for all the hard work and effort she put in to getting the Chief prepared. She'd thought about it. Fritz was off at an AA meeting and she was home alone, snuggling on the couch trying desperately to find something inane to watch on TV. There were a few times she grabbed her cellphone, and almost called the brunette. But every time something stopped her. Would the Captain want to see her outside of work? What if the Captain was busy? Did the Captain even like her? Instead, she found a movie entitled 'Imagine Me and You'. The plot caused an uneasy feeling to settle in her stomach.

The third time Brenda should have invited Sharon to dinner, was when she'd realised just how invaluable the Captain was in her life. The older woman had supported her through thick and thin throughout the investigation in to her conduct, sourcing the leak and offering a shoulder to lean on during the debacle. But she was confused. Her mind kept telling her it would be just another friendly dinner, but her body kept telling her it was time to act on her attraction to the Captain. Her Mama always said there was a first time for everything. She just wasn't so sure that 'first female crush' was one of the 'firsts' her mother had intended her to have.

It wasn't until Fritz had left her and she'd settled in to her new job that Brenda finally worked up the courage to ask Sharon to dinner. She'd been delighted when the Captain had said yes. But when the evening came, she was a wreck. She had no idea what to wear when being seen out with the always impeccably-dressed woman, she wasn't sure if this was a date and she wasn't even sure she was ready for it to be a date.

She needn't have worried. When the two women met at the French restaurant, everything had clicked. As always, Sharon had taken charge, demanding to know the nature of their relationship. Once the blonde had admitted her feelings the awkwardness dissipated and the conversation flowed as freely as the wine.

When the undoubtedly more sober Captain dropped Brenda off after their date, she insisted on walking the blonde to the front door. Brenda was nervous. She was ready to go on a date with a woman, but to sleep with one? She wasn't so sure.

Her worries were unfounded. The brunette had led her to the door and held open her ridiculously large handbag for her whilst the blonde searched for her keys. Upon returning the monstrosity to the former Chief, the older woman leaned in toward Brenda, close enough to make her intentions clear, but far enough away that Brenda could refuse her. She didn't. The blonde closed the gap between them, bringing her lips to softly touch the other woman's. When they both pulled away, the blonde's hands clutching at her purse and the brunette's lightly grasping her forearms, one glance was all they needed to answer all their questions. There would be other dates. More kisses and eventually more than kissing. But the brunette had waited this long for Brenda to finally have the courage to ask her out - she could wait a little longer for the next step.
