Our Production Design Workshop class (Phil Arts 163) had its major class production last March 4. I was assigned to be the stage manager-slash-overall in charge-slash-director for the event, and I couldn't be any more stressed and harassed but overly fulfilled at the same time. Imagine being the scriptwriter, prop-making volunteer and oversee-er, tech head, class evaluator, assistant to the professor, doing follow-ups on venue reservation, and endless talking with school guards and administration staff.
Thank God I took this course.
I'm a theater enthusiast (or advocate) and I have worked for theater and some small-time high school productions for quite some time, and I must say it's the best task ever. Acting is a whole lot of fun (and I got to experience it for the first time last year during our org play), but working backstage with the production staff and running the whole production smoothly are the most fulfilling jobs in the world. I actually miss staying in school for late hours just to finish our stage design/backdrop then eating noodles and ice cream with friends for dinner after.
I was busy with the technical stuffs backstage so I wasn't able to do my own documentation of the event. But thanks to (1) a good classmate and (2) my professor in Visual Arts Workshop class last semester, I got to witness the whole production one more time--in the audience's perspective. Iba kasi ang view ng show 'pag nasa backstage eh.
This event actually stirred the women's rights activists in school, but I guess our professor talked with them. Watch the first video to know what I mean. ;)
OKAY. I haven't had my thank you speech after the prod so I'm posting it here. Hahaha:
This class production wouldn't be a success without of course the guidance and sobra-sobrang pressure ni Sir Ryan Redillas--Sir, thank you sa pressure. Dahil dun, I want to pursue a career in production design.
And to my amazing classmates for the cooperation and (sometimes corny) jokes shared, thank you so much. Naks. ;)
Yes, it is possible to run an amazing show even for a low budget, and the Set Design group and I can attest to that--all it needs are an absolutely funny script with winning punchlines (done of course in collaboration with two nice friends) and production numbers from classmates who are members of the school dance troupe.
END OF SPEECH.
When asked if I would do a similar event like this... yeah I would.

Thank you to Kai Orejola and Sir Chong Ardivilla for the video documentations.
