For all that there’s the sweetness of the reunion, there are political repercussions, and let me get this straight; Jim helped save the Earth but Starfleet denied him access to one of their hospitals? Bureaucratic pettiness at is best, no wonder they weren’t able to cope with Nero!

The bonding between Jim and Spock is … I’m running out of descriptive words here. For all the times they’ve been bound by rules and regulations, or surrounded by the crew, it seems perfect that for such a momentous event in their lives it’s just the two of them:

Jim spares a thought for all the pomp and circumstance that would grace an event like this on Nu'ri Ah'rak, but one glance at the intensity on Spock's face confirms they don't need it.

All they need is each other.

The final warning from Spock that there would be no more barriers started to get me and then … yep. Tears.

Spock lays comforting hands on Jim's bruises. He bars the door to Jim's room and holds his hand in the emergency department. He whispers promises of something better when the people of Riverside curse and spit. He shows Jim the Stalwart and the Enterprise and the sunlit kitchen of the San Francisco apartment.

And then just when I thought I was okay and wiped my eyes … oh wait, there’s more!

im runs riot down the halls of Spock's disapproving childhood, a whirlwind of colour and life that banishes the tension and disapproval. He firmly takes the knife from Spock's hands and holds them instead. He embraces Spock's dedication to logic but also revels in each moment of sarcasm, each glint of humor or mischief. Jim holds a mirror up to his human self and smiles until Spock smiles back. He shows Spock his own compassion, his fanatically loyal crew and the faces of every save he remembers.

Somehow, amongst all the viciousness of history, they find each other.

‘The viciousness of history’ .. that’s just GOLD right there. Jim might have thought there was some sort of sex involved, but that level of meld was far more intimate and beautiful all at once. With the last of their barriers finally gone, Jim is able to give Spock with something even more precious: laughter.

CAPS LOCK LOVE.

Spock laughing might seem incredible, but no less is the idea of McCoy having a happy attack. It’s easy to understand why though; his nearest and dearest are alive, they’ve got a job to do, and they’re still sticking it to authority. McCoy as deep personal ethics - Hippocratic oath and all that - but that doesn’t mean he’s one to play by the rules if he doesn’t agree with them.

Funny ... that bonding scene originally contained sex but I rewrote it in order to remove it. Somehow, I felt it needed to be a true meeting of minds and souls, rather than a physical release. I'm glad it resonated with you. I think every human being longs for that kind of acceptance and connection with another person. That could be what makes it such an interesting trope.

McCoy, let me count the ways. I adore him, it's simple :)
