You know how sometimes you have a kink, but you don't even know you have said kink until someone writes about it and you explode?

Holy SHIT I love Spock/McCoy being all antagonistic-but-secretly-friends and everyone else being all uncomfortable with it but Spock and McCoy enjoy their fun, secret friendship club.

Yay!!!

Lol! I thought at first it would be a weird dynamic, having had Spock and McCoy know each other better than Kirk and McCoy, but I've really warmed to it over the writing of this story.

Also, you have the_ar5 to thank for the feel of this particular encounter, she did a great beta job on that scene.

Whew, loved all the dialogue but the Spock-McCoy interaction specifically. :D

The reference to paper newspapers in the last part and the content of the newscast, however, have me a little confused of when this is taking place. I thought it was 2259/similar to ST:XI but the politics/news seem rather US-American 21st century... Anyway, this is very enjoyable to read and I'm already looking forward to the next part. :D

I'm glad Spock/McCoy came across well.

I thought the paper newspapers were explained, but maybe I didn't do such a great job of that! Lol! They're kind of a retro kink ... like, you know how there's a bit of a revival for the slower things in life (slow food, slow cooking, retro bicycling etc)? Well, that tends to happen when society as a whole takes a look at itself and decides things could definitely improve. I thought that both Spock and Jim, being who they are, would appreciate a slice of history when it was available.

Also, the politics is specifically designed to reflect the current global climate. I wanted readers to be able to identify with the day to day stressors that provide a back drop to the more personal events in life.

Hope all that makes sense!

Thanks so much for reading and giving me feedback; it helps me learn and improve :)

Ahaha, retropapers! *g* The current US-American health debate reference was strange for me because I'm German. Well, and because hopefully, the unified Earth/Federation will have different problems in 2259. ;-) But thanks for the explanation, that does make sense. :-)

Well, I'm Australian, but the health issues they're having in the States are roughly translatable to one of many debates going on in my country, so I kind of ran with it. There'll be other little grabs of news that will (hopefully) reference goings on in other countries.

I guess I was deliberately trying to point out that in 2259 they are still having similar problems! Probably with less fall-out and better resolutions, but I think when you add a crisis situation like Nero, the seams of society start to unravel a bit ... at least, that's the feel I was going for!

Really enjoying this - the AU you're building here is really interesting and believable, and I can't wait to see how Jim and Spock get on.

I'm not entirely sure what a 'Point One' or a 'Point Two' is though - should I know this already, or is it going to be explained?

I'm not sure I ever really 'explain' the terminology in a dictionary-like manner, but for example; in the prologue Spock is the one performing the rescue on Vega while the rest of the crew are on the medevac shuttle. Additionally, Pike states that Spock was the best Point One he'd ever had, and Spock thinks of Pike as his Point Two.

When Kirk gets his roster allocation, he's a Point (1st grade) which sort of cements that as a junior position.

I guess I could have laid it all out, but personally I find that annoying when I'm the reader, so I opted to imply and explain around the edges of it.

Sorry it was unclear for you, does it make sense now?

I'd sort of intuited as much, but I wasn't 100% sure, so thank you, that helps :)

Hey, no problem. I'll have to keep this in mind in the future in case there are other things that might need a little more explication ;)
