A-hunting we shall go

Apr 12, 2007 23:41

Triv has just come back to the island with... something. It's a rather large something, in a big and oddly ridged soft-sided plastic box. It doesn't appear to be terribly heavy for its size (a good thing, as one of the things she doesn't tell people about her particular variety of dimensional travel is that she can't bring anything with her ( Read more... )

Alec has a calico kitten on his shoulder. He doesn't know why it's there, but it seems to like it. It had been following him around for the past couple of days and sleeping on his head.

He peers at Triv and the something with a curious expression, but he doesn't ask what it is.

Triv gives him a nod - and a slightly curious look for the kitten - then starts undoing the straps and unfolding the box. It appears that the box itself is part of the contraption, the sides unfolding into broad flat planes, and the central section into a narrow transparent shape with two hatches. Inside the box are more panels, these ones opaque. She begins to unload them from inside the clear box.

The kitten mewls and bats at one of the numerous earrings in Alec's ear. He shifts his shoulder slightly, causing it to grip tightly and stop playing with his ear. Alec watches her, leaning up against the doorway, waiting to see what happens.

Triv continues putting the contraption together, attaching the twin panels that had been the box to the clear section, then turning it over before putting the opaque panels from the interior back in... in a very different configuration. The clear center now had a floor, and atop the floor were two seats, one behind the other.

It's obviously some sort of device that you sit in apparently. A funny sort of couch maybe? It doesn't look very comfortable.

The kitten gnaws on his ear and he smacks it lightly on the head making it go "mmrp?" It then decides to try and see if it can go down Alec's shirt. He giggles as the tail twitches across his nose, but then stifles it so not to bother Triv as she's working.

She glances over and laughs at the kitten, wiping her brow. She's not quite done yet, obviously - there are still some parts unaccounted for, like the three large balls - but she's willing to take a few minutes break.

The kitten makes its way into Alec's shirt and can be seen wiggling around the tight fabric. Alec's expression is one of deep concern and trying not to laugh as he as the fur rubbing against him.

Eventually the kitten falls out, landing on the floor with a confused expression on its face. It blinks at Triv and Alec before walking off to see if it can find something to eat.

Ah, kittens. This is a big part of the reason she has so many cats - there are few things better at distracting her from unpleasant thoughts and memories than feline antics.

However, this isn't finishing the job she was working on, so she sighed and went back to working on it. The balls went into specially-made sockets, and black ropes connected the wings with various other parts of the machine. She straightened up from connecting the last of them with a sigh. "Okay, now we just need to give it a couple hours to charge up, and get some supplies together."

"Supples? For what? What is that? What's it supposed to do?" The questions pop out of Alec's mouth with hardly a breath in between them.

He's curious, can you tell?

She gives a grin... a rather smug grin at that. That's the most spontaneous and uninhibited that she's seen this Alec yet, which counts as a victory at this point. "It's a flying machine, specifically a de Havilland Daedalus model solar-powered long-range ultralight. And we're going to be taking a little hunting trip, you and I."

"Fly?" He asks, "That? That can fly?" He goes over and peers at it closely. "It can't fly. It's not alive. Is it? No, it can't be, you put it together. How do the wings flap? How does it even get off the ground? It has no legs to run... no ability to flap and no mind to tell it where to go."

The grin just gets wider. "The wings don't flap, it's not alive, the mind telling it where to go will be mine, and you may notice we have a nice, convenient cliff over there to launch from."

Alec looks over at the cliff, trotting a few feet over to it and then peering at the aircraft again. He's clearly struggling to figure out exactly how the machine could work as he's never even ever come closed to that sort of technology before.

"Magic?" he asks, hesitantly, offering it as an explanation as to how it will all work.

"You could call it that. It's technology, but it's a special, very advanced kind that's beyond your people. The light of the sun gives it power to fly."

And that makes absolutely no sense to him whatsoever, so he's going to stick with magic.

"Hunting trip?" he asks, going back to the other part of her conversation. "We're going hunting?"

"Mmhm. You're obviously wasted going after goats, I'm going to show you how to deal with something a bit bigger." She gives him a grin.
