Dancing and Verandas

“Teach me to dance,” Koyama says.

Sunlight filters through mahogany shutters and speckles the ground; illuminating strips fall sharp on Taguchi’s skin, highlighting a birthmark on Taguchi’s forearm and pimples on his right cheek. Around them, the dance studio slowly clears out. Boys chatter and giggle and throw things, while the two of them sit still by the window with rays of light seeping into their sweat-soaked clothes.

Koyama repeats his request.

Taguchi laughs. He stretches long arms and nearly cuffs Koyama in the shoulder.

“Teach yourself,” he grunts. He breathes warm air, scatters dust particles illuminated by sunlight with every deep breath.

Koyama crinkles his nose. “But I need to learn the dance moves by concert day, and it’s only next week!” he groans.

Taguchi kneads the back of his calf in response, before standing up slowly and letting out a hand. Koyama pouts but when Taguchi doesn’t give in, he smiles lopsidedly and grabs Taguchi’s hand. Palm slides against palm and fingers hold on tight; Taguchi pulls Koyama up with a laugh and together they walk back to the dressing rooms.

The train car rattles and there is an odd buzz in the air that Taguchi can’t quite place. It tingles in his ears, makes him feel jittery. Taguchi turns up the volume of his game and goes back to defeating level four. Next to him, Koyama flips through a semi-worn textbook, leaning against the train door and cursing softly at words that seem to blend into each other and make no sense at all.

Koyama and Taguchi have gone home together ever since those first few awkward hellos in the train station, when they both realized that Taguchi’s house was only one stop after Koyama’s. After they knew that, it had become normal to wait for each other before heading home. It was just something they did. Taguchi and Koyama, Koyama and Taguchi, going home together with aching limbs and sore throats after an intensive day of practice.

So they take the train home after dance practice today like any other day. Two elderly women get up and hobble to the door; Taguchi claims the seats quickly, sitting down as he pulls the edge of Koyama’s shirt.

Koyama sits down absentmindedly and he sniffs. “I hate school,” he deadpans.

Taguchi sighs, “You and the rest of the world.” He stretches out his legs and nearly trips a businessman in the process. The businessman glares and Koyama laughs.

A calm pause washes over them as Koyama shuffles more pages and Taguchi un-pauses his game. The minutes tick by; Koyama reads two chapters and Taguchi dies four times, but eventually the overhead speaker calls out Koyama’s station and the two of them look up.

When Koyama gets off at his stop and sees Taguchi right next to him, Taguchi shrugs.

“You wanted me to help you dance,” he says simply.

Koyama nods with a laugh, and together they walk back to his house.

“I got it,” Koyama says, confidence lacing his words and etched into his smile.

Taguchi doesn’t look very impressed. “Really?” he asks incredulously.

Koyama’s smile slips. “Not really,” he admits. He glances at the clock behind them and rubs a tired eye, “But it’s late, you should go.”

Taguchi groans. “I probably should,” he says. He sits in the middle of Koyama’s veranda and lays down flat on his back, curling his toes and breathing deep. “Do you have a camcorder or something?”

Koyama’s eyes light up, “Yeah, I think we do. You want to record the steps?” Taguchi nods and Koyama stands up and rubs sweaty hands against his shorts. “I’ll ask my dad.”

An hour later, they finish recording the dance steps and Taguchi laughs as they watch it played back on the camcorder screen. Koyama huddles close and soft hair sweeps on Taguchi’s shoulder.

“We’re so gangly,” Taguchi observes. Koyama hums in agreement. Koyama pokes fun at Taguchi’s awkwardly bending body and Taguchi tells Koyama to stop looking at the ground when he dances. They end up re-taping the dance because Taguchi is out of the frame for most of it, and then they’re finally done for the day.

When Taguchi’s at the door and about to leave, Koyama clears his throat.

“Thank you,” he says. Taguchi’s eyes crinkle and he waves before leaving.

After the Shounen Club filming, Taguchi asks Koyama out for a drink. Surprised but at the same time not, Koyama accepts.

“I’m surprised you remember me asking you for help,” Koyama sighs an hour later. He swirls his beer and takes a deep sip. It fizzes cold down his throat and he sighs happily. He scratches his temple and giggles a little, “I was hoping you’d forget that.”

“How could I forget?” Taguchi laughs. “You had a really big veranda.”

Notes: I could not do the making love part of the prompt because…I’m done with thinking about this fic hahaha.

Brain, stop being weird. Love, Triv.
