Train Rides
“Why do we always make this stop?” Nino groans, when he glances back to find Aiba staring mesmerized through a windowpane, the same window showcase he always pauses at. “Aiba,” he yells tiredly. He jogs back to Aiba’s excited figure and tugs a soft denim sleeve, “back away from the baked goods. Before I hurt you. I mean it,” Nino checks his cell phone. They have three minutes. If they run, they may make it to the platform on time.
Aiba doesn’t seem to care; he presses careful hands against polished windows, leaving fingerprints on the glass. He turns to Nino with sorrow in his eyes, fingers trailing smudges down the surface. “But they look so good,” he whines. He turns back and with open mouth, stares at the chocolate cakes and fruit tarts sitting so prettily arranged in the window case.
Nino rolls his eyes, “You eat, then. I’ve got a train to catch.” He steps away from the bakery and Aiba pouts. Nino takes another step; the pout deepens. Aiba doesn’t say anything in response after that, and with a quick wave he rushes into the bakery with glee.
Ten minutes later, Nino greets him outside the door. “I was going to miss the train, anyway,” Nino mutters.
Aiba smiles and hands him a curry bun.
They walk to the station in silence, leaving crumbs of bread in their wake. Together, they nibble on curry buns; warmth spreads through Nino’s throat and Aiba sighs with happiness. They arrive at the train station, and once they enter, their movements are habitual. They race down the stairs as they always do (Aiba wins this time, claims that that the curry bun had given him super strength), take two lefts and walk straight, and then they take a right and the stairs to the platform is just there.
Aiba rocks back and forth on his heels as they wait for the train, humming offbeat tunes under his breath. Next to him, Nino leans against a post, flipping his phone open and closed to pass the time. After a minute, Aiba starts to chatter about his encounter with Yokoyama the other day and how he had nearly died from over-Kansai exposure, and Nino tells him to stop making weird friends.
The train pulls up minutes later, and Aiba and Nino squeeze on. The train car is crowded and they stand close to each other; Aiba grabs a handle tightly and Nino balances precariously against the door. He pulls out his handheld game system and Aiba laughs, squeezing closer, arm brushing Nino’s shoulder. He leans over Nino and makes lewd comments as Nino defeats another boss, and then a voice sounds on the loudspeaker and Aiba looks up.
“This is my stop,” Aiba announces when the train halts, even though he knows that Nino knows. Nino has known this for months, since the first day Aiba and Nino had taken the train together and Aiba had nearly tripped out the car in order to catch the transfer.
Nino nods, barely taking his eyes off the game. “Watch out for rapists,” he warns gravely.
Aiba salutes, “Will do!” He walks out of the train car without another word and Nino un-pauses his game.
When the trains pulls away from the platform and he realizes that they forgot to say goodbye, Nino smiles lopsidedly; he’ll see Aiba again tomorrow anyway.
AN: ...I just wrote Aiba. And Nino. What on earth. First Tegoshi, now this? What is the world coming to?
