Chapter 1
"Yoochun-ah, we're home!"
He lifted his head when he heard his name. Did he fall asleep? He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and greeted his parents when they both entered the room. “How was work?”
“Don’t worry, Yoochun-ah.” Mr. Park said smiling brightly. “At the end of the week we have our well deserved money, and I’ll buy you that bow you wanted to have for a long time.”
“Appa, it’s no need.” Yoochun said quickly when he was pouring his parents a drink. “You could better spend the money on food, for example, the rice basket is getting empty.”
“But it won’t take long before you turn 18, can’t I buy my son something special for his birthday?”
Yoochun smiled but shook his head. He knew he said he wanted a bow. But there were more important things than wasting money on just an expensive bow. Sometimes Yoochun felt more aware of their situation than his parents. He was the one thinking mostly about saving money while his parents wanted to buy things.
The money they got from the Kim family was just enough to eat for one week with the three of them. So they couldn’t permit to buy something else but the things they really needed.
“We can’t Appa, did you see how much won it costs? From the price of that we could eat for 2 weeks!”
Mr. Park sighed. “Well then.. But don’t forbid us to buy you a present for your birthday, Yoochun-ah.”
But for Yoochun, the thought of a present was already enough.
As usual Mrs. Park prepared the dinner for the three of them, their daily dinner excited of rice, vegetables and a tiny piece of meat. It was enough to feed them, but the fact that his parents were underweight was a big concern to Yoochun. He had been thinking to find a job, too.
But his parents would tell him not to, he still had a whole life ahead of him. He should enjoy his youth now he still could.
But how could he enjoy his youth like this?
When his parents would be off working Yoochun would be worrying about them. Mainly because Yoochun knew the abusive emperor, those thought would spook around in his head the whole day. He’d only feel better when his parents came back home. So he could watch them talk about their day. He wanted them to be save.
The Parks had a really strong bond, they’d hardly fight except over their job. Yoochun was their own son and wished they would be able to spoil him. But unfortunately their finances dropped when the new emperor got hold of the power in Korea. Before the reign of the current king they could easily afford better clothes, they could send Yoochun to school and Mrs. Park didn’t even have to work.
But since the taxes of the land became higher and the citizens could go against the king’s will they were powerless.
Yoochun had seen his parents suffer.
After dinner Yoochun went out to the forest to cut would for the open fire. The winters were kinda cold so wood was a high priority in any household. He walked all the way to the border of the fortress and surprisingly he stared at the tower at the southern end. The tower that guy was. He unfolded the blue paper he received from him that afternoon.
“Can we be friends?”
How could they be friends if they didn’t even know each other?
He remembered how that guy had been smiling at him. He had never seen such a pure smile. But then again, he was inside the fortress, the house of the king. Was he working there, too? Just like his parents did?
Even people this young were working for that cruel king. It was despicable.
He kept staring at the blue piece of paper and sighed deeply.
If he was going back to his tree tomorrow.. Would he see him again?
How can we become friends if we’re total strangers to each other?
---
With an old book under his arm and his harmonica in his hand he was walking to his tree. He decided just to go like he always did. Not really thinking about seeing the guy from yesterday again. It was much colder than the day before, so he made sure he and his parents had enough to wear for this winter.
What was kind of hard when most of their money would be used for food.
He leaned against the bark and took his book. It was his favorite book. The story was about a man who had to fight in a far away country, leaving his wife and children behind. Yoochun never thought he’d like a book like this, but somehow one scene made his chest hurt.
The farewell scene. Where the man has to say goodbye to his wife and kids, promising he’ll come back safely. But in the end the man dies during the fight.
Yoochun has read this book so many times, he lost track of how many. That didn’t really matter, he loved the story so much he just couldn’t get enough of it.
After a few chapters he thought it was time to stop. But just when he was about to close the book a blue paper plane landed on the pages. Yoochun immediately turned his head to the tower and saw him again.
That smile was there again, too. Curiously he opened the note:
“I knew you’d come back”
Yoochun stared at the guy for a while, then he took an old pencil out of his coat and wrote under the previous message.
“How do you know?”
It didn’t take the other long to reply to him.
“Because you come here almost every day.”
So this guy knew he came here a lot? That had to mean he had been staring at him for a while. Yoochun laughed. Then decided to reply again.
“So you have been staring at me, haven’t you?”
Surprisingly when the guy in the tower read his message a blush appeared on his chubby cheeks. Something Yoochun never saw before with an other guy. He just shrugged his shoulders and waited for the guy’s reply.
“Maybe. Mostly I heard you play the harmonica, it was really good.”
With that, Yoochun took his harmonica out of his pocket, showing it at the guy. The guy nodded and smiled when he saw it. Yoochun played a little tune and after that received a smile from him. The guy looked nice. He had that kind of smile you keep remembering, how hard you try to forget it.
Yoochun was curious what he was doing up there in that tower. Why he never saw him before. Maybe he was one of those servants who couldn’t come outside. But his clothes looked kind of expensive, too. He didn’t know what to think of him.
“I don’t know if you mind me asking again, but I’ve never really had friends.”
This guys was really desperate for friends, so it seemed.
“Alright then, let’s become friends. “
“Really? I’m so glad.”
To see his smile again, it was weird but Yoochun felt something weird in his chest. The guy was really cute. Like a kid.
They kept exchanging those blue paper planes for hours, until the sun was slowly getting down to the horizon.
“It’s getting dark, I should be going home now.”
“Okay, are you coming back tomorrow?”
Instead of replying Yoochun nodded, making the guy smile even more. They waved each other goodbye and Yoochun got down from the tree. When he was down he suddenly remembered he forgot to ask the guy’s name. He stared at the window, the curtains were closed now. He decided he’d ask his name tomorrow.
When Yoochun arrived at his home his parents were already there. “Yoochun-ah, were you out all day?” His father asked surprised, looking up from the newspaper.
He nodded. “Yeah, I think I fell asleep during the afternoon.” He lied.
“Did you even eat lunch?”
“No Umma, I forgot.”
Mrs. Park frowned at Yoochun and wacked his head. “Ya, what did I tell you, you need to eat lunch every day!”
“Ouch, umma, sorry, I just forgot!”
“Well then.” She sighed when she gave him a bowl of soup. “Then eat more now, okay?”
“Yes.” Once Yoochun had finished his dinner he bid his parents goodbye, his parents were surprised he was going to his room this early. He just told them he wanted to finish the book before he’d go to sleep.
When he was alone in his room he opened the book on the page he read the last. He found the last paper plane they exchanged before he was heading home.
“Okay, are you coming back tomorrow?”
Yoochun smiled. For the first time in his life he had something he could look forward to. Even though he didn’t knew a lot about the guy, it was still kind of vague, but still, he seemed like a very nice guy.
Maybe becoming friends with him wasn’t that bad.
