Thursday we went out into R.V. Taylor homes and walked around, just to get an idea of what the neighborhoods and people would be like. It was most of the kids' last day of school so a lot of them were running around outside, also lots of adults outside who greeted us and were generally really friendly. A lot of them knew what we were doing there already. There seemed to be a lot of police circling though. Finally, an unmarked Tahoe with two cops in bulletproof vests pulled up, serious as hell. Here's our conversation with them:
Cop: Anyone talk to y'all yet?
Us: No?
Cop throws it into reverse and pulls up next to us
Cop: I know y'all are just trying to do your jobs...and you gotta do what you gotta do...but this really is not a good place to be right now. There have been a lot of shootings here lately. As in...this morning. And last night. And the night before.
Us: So...you would NOT recommend that we walk around here right now? [It was about noon.]
Cop: No. I'd recommend that you leave. Now.
Here is a news story on what was going on in the neighborhood Gang fights! And that was supposed to be one of the better neighborhoods. My job is so exciting!
Last night a group of us went to a barbecue restaurant with amazing ribs. Today, 4 of us went over to Orange Beach. The traffic wasn't bad at all. We have plans to go to lots of beaches, a rope swing that is somewhere around this campus, and make smores using the grills in the back of the dorms. Tomorrow I am finally going to sleep in for the first time in a very long time (hopefully)!
