People always say how much they love reading The Guardian because of its great writing - which by the way, I completely agree with. Do you know how many articles I read in the Straits Times that I find surprisingly interesting and then realise it's because at the bottom, it is credited to the Guardian? - but when they say that, they usually think of politics, of features, or an op-ed piece.
But No! The greatness of the Guardian extends even to sports! Usually I would just take the drier report of the BBC as adequate, but then yesterday, I discovered the Guardian run by run coverage of cricket. England in India. Yes, cricket, Guardian, funny, fascinating, personalities. Fantastic - it's like a blog with a personable writer, and with guaranteed great writing and funnies. What's there not to love?

Lawrence Booth
Thursday March 9, 2006
Preamble Hello. They said they were hopeless. They said they didn't have a clue. They said they could hardly find first gear without stalling. But this morning the taxi firm used by the Guardian conveyed me from Earlsfield to Farringdon without crashing, kerb-crawling or failing to turn up at all. Yes, wonders never cease. And, guess what? In a contrived kind of way, it's a metaphor we can apply to the England cricket team! Except that it's been raining in Mohali and the groundstaff are currently taking the covers off under very weepy skies. So we won't have a prompt start, but - folks - we will have each other. Every cloud etc...
