There's a good side and a bad side to this post.
First off, the good: Openly gay Australian diver Matthew Mitcham wins a gold in Beijing. As the article points out, Louganis was also gay, but he wasn't out with his sexuality when he won. Mitcham has been out and has actually worked towards having his boyfriend present at the Olympics.
Besides, he looks like this. Here's another one.
The bad?
NBC did not mention Mitcham's orientation, nor did they show his family and partner who were in the stands. NBC has made athletes' significant others a part of the coverage in the past, choosing to spotlight track athlete Sanya Richards' fiancee, a love triangle between French and Italian swimmers and Kerri Walsh's wedding ring debacle.
Of course it's okay to show Michael Phelps with his mom, but gods forbid that the gays get the same treatment. Fuck you NBC. Now I know why you guys got the incredible pooping intern.
