So I am mulling over submitting an entry for the
RPG Solitaire Challenge. In short, the challenge is to create an activity that while it might not be an RPG per se, it still scratches your RPG itch when you can’t get a group together. The old Fighting Fantasy books would fit into this category. Another fine example is Tony Dowler’s
How to Host a Dungeon which turns creating a dungeon’s history and current occupants into a solo game that is great fun in its own right.
Of the challenges offered two caught my eye. Build a Better Choose-Your-Own-Adventure, which challenges you to take what you loved about CYOA and their ilk and do it one better and Living in the Future, which asks you to take the latest technologies and work them into your RPG experience.
So in a chocolate-in-my-peanut-butter moment, I immediately thought of the fine fellows at
Choice of Games . If you have not been there, you must check them out. They have not only created some very fine text based games but made the programming language, ChoiceScript, available for other people to make games as well. I’ve been toying with the idea of making one and this contest has given me that little push needed to give it a go.
So I plan to document my progress here as well as blather about CYOA, ChoiceScript and gaming in general. Wish me luck!
