26: American Gods by Neil Gaiman
I almost always wonder where a book is going as I read. With American Gods, I stopped wondering halfway through. Not because I knew where it was going, but because it didn't matter. The process of getting there was enough. This was an incredibly interesting book, with fascinating characters that I didn't want to say goodbye to at the end.
27: What Came Before He Shot Her by Elizabeth George
I started this yesterday when I got home and put it down only long enough to sleep last night. Elizabeth George writes the Inspector Lynley mysteries, which I absolutely love. This was the backstory for one of them. It was interesting because I knew going into it what the outcome would be: Inspector Lynley's wife would be murdered. I even knew who would do it. This book wasn't about who did it, though, but rather why it was done. It was about how circumstances beyond a young boy's control, a desire to protect his family, and his incredibly poor choices being the only options he could see available to him led to the death of a woman he'd never met and never heard of. I could see, with each step that led him down the path, where his decisions and actions were going to take him, and I could understand why he thought he had to do the things he did. It was an absolutely heartbreaking story, and one of the most riveting I've ever read.
