1. One book that changed your life?
Magic's Pawn, the first book of Mercedes Lackey's series, The Last Herald-Mage. It was my introduction to fantasy. It opened doors to new worlds that I'd never imagined existed, and it helped me explore my beliefs about people and relationships and diversity in many areas. I might be a very different person today if I hadn't read it.
2. One book you have read more than once?
Just one? Melanie Rawn's
Dragon Prince, first in the Dragon Prince trilogy, which is followed by the Dragon Star trilogy. I've read all of six books several times, but Dragon Prince is still my favorite. I feel as if I know the characters. It's a beautiful book.
3. One book you would want on a desert island?
George R R Martin's entire A Song of Ice and Fire series, my favorite series evar, which stats with
A Game of Thrones. These are the books that I rave about when someone asks me for a recommendation. They are everything I hope for when I pick up a book. Characters who are so real to me that I feel as if I should be able to invite them to dinner (or get a restraining order, depending on who we're talking about), who are neither Shining Examples of Good nor Wicked Evil Villains but people with depth and both good and bad traits. The story progresses rather than hovering around book four for six or seven books. But then, this is not Robert Jordan we're talking about, so. *ahem* Not only do things happen, I care about what's happening. I want very much to know what happens next, and I want to know now. I lose myself in the books, and there's nothing better than that.
4. One book that made you laugh?
Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich. All of her Stephanie Plum books make me laugh so hard it's a wonder I don't injure myself in the process. I want very much to hang out with Stephanie. And perhaps to lick Ranger.
5. One book that made you cry?
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls is a total sobfest. Oh dear god, what an amazing book. I checked it out of the school library every year, knowing full well I would end up crying like a baby at the end. I'm getting all sniffly now, just thinking about it.
6. One book you wish had been written?
How To Figure Out What You Want To Be When You Grow Up: A Guide For Grown-Ups Who Aren't Entirely Grown Up Yet.
7. One book you wish had never been written?
Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. Oh, sweet shrieking Jesus. Men are people and so are women and if they'd stop seeing each other as alien perhaps they'd have less difficulty communicating with each other.
8. One book you are currently reading?
Melusine by Sarah Monette. Oh dear god. I was captivated by the second page. I'm only 90-ish pages in, and I am in love with this book.
9. One book you have been meaning to read?
Kushiel's Scion by Jacqueline Carey. It's on my book shelf, just waiting to be read, but I keep putting it off. Not because I don't want to read it, because oh dear god I do. It's because I want to read it when I can devote hours and hours to just reading. I don't want this broken up into five minutes here on the bus and ten minutes there at lunch. I want to lose myelf in it the way I did with the other Kushiel books.
10. Now ask five FriendBots very nicely to tell you about the books they love.
