The new George R R Martin book, A Feast for Crows, is just as good so far as the first three in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Read them. You'll be glad you did. Go buy the first one, A Game of Thrones. While you're at it, buy the others, too. Once you get started you won't want to stop long enough to go back to the book shop.
