i spent the 2 months prior to the election in 2004 bumming around europe, often declaring to people in pubs (when asked, which was often) that i had, in fact, voted for kerry, as i had voted for gore in 2000 (my mother made sure i got my absentee ballot for virginia, and i mailed it in plenty of time). i watched one of the debates that year sitting with other americans in spain. in the end, i was kind of glad i got home a couple of days after the fact, so i could stop being embarrassed to be an american.

if i were there now, i wouldn't be embarrassed anymore. :)
